Pre-detonation, you're pinging.

Or maybe pre-ignition, also known as detonation or pinging. I haven't encountered that in a long time but I think I would reduce the gap to .035 on the new plugs and check them after a few hundred miles, or enrich the fuel/air mix and have a better, cooler running bike.

Plug Gap Spec. is .038 - .043 Went to a colder plug NGK DCPR8E .040 gap

Got this off the net:

http://www.ngksparkplugs.com/tech_su...2.asp?mode=nml

Pre-ignition

Pre-ignition occurs when the air-fuel mixture is ignited by a hot object / area in the combustion chamber before the timed spark event occurs.
When the spark plug firing end (tip) temperature exceeds 800°C, pre-ignition originating from the overheated insulator ceramic can occur.
Is most often caused by the wrong (too hot) heat range spark plug, and/or over-advanced ignition timing. An improperly installed (insufficient torque) spark plug can also result in pre-ignition due to inadequate heat transfer.
Pre-ignition will dramatically raise the cylinder temperature and pressure and can melt and hole pistons, burn valves, etc.

What brand of plug do most of you guys use? I have autolites in my Sporty, but my Father always ran NGK. I know some running the platinum quads. Does it really make a difference? And what heat range would a stock 883 (with S&S E) be most happy with?

Glad I saw this thread, still learning about pinging. My HD is running fine, just wondering what the most popular opinion is.

Thanx in advance, RD.

I've run both NGK and Autolites and have no complaints about either. NGK's in the carb'ed sporty and Autolites on the EFI bikes.

NGK seems to be a good plug.

I run autolites in mine. Had a little pinging with the hd ones, but no problems with the autolites.

Hi Jack..........

This thread isn't about spark plugs, it's about the real damage that riding while pinging will cause.
