Default CT Loud Exhaust Enforcement

If you live or ride in CT this year be advised the CT State Police last Sunday, 5/23, set up in the little town of Kent on the NY border with a decibel meter stopping motorcycles and checking their noise levels. Anything above 90 got a ticket or, some cases, the owners were directed to push their bikes off the road and call someone. We just missed the "roadblock" on Sunday but apparently the CSP had placed a notice in the newspaper they would be there. Word is they will be doing this around the state, especially the shoreline and NW corners periodically this summer. Guess the state needs the money

Every loud pipe ticket written in Denver, Colorado Springs, and ABQ were thrown out. Take the ticket dont be an *** and go to court and get it thrown out. They will stop writing them just like the 3 cities above.

what was the reason for the dismissals?
would help out many members to know.

even being a LEO in NY City, i cringe when i see them towing bikes on a flatbed with one strap for each bike.

the ticket is bad enough. towing the bike is just downright nasty.

Lack of training for the officers, no standard by which testing was done, only writing ticket for lack of stamp on muffler, writing tickets for 50 state approved systems, all kinds of reasons.

What are they towing them for? Even in Kalifornia its a fix it ticket! Get it fixed find an officer and get it signed off!

so how did they get them dismissed? This really pisses me off cause the ones that ARE really too dang loud are ruining it for the rest of us. Kinda the way things always go, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

towing for many different offenses.
maybe one of our Highway guys will chime in.

there have been numerous checkpoints at our bridges, and tunnels. ticket is issued for an offense, the bike is sidelined, and then towed away.

The Denver, and Springs ordinances simply required an EPA stamp. There was no clear standard to prove that the vehicle was loud. That was unenforcible for a lot of reasons, not the least of which was, it was only applied to motorcycles. The cops would have had to crawl under cars and trucks too, if they were to equally enforce the ordinance. Some Denver cops were issued mirrors to check for the stamps in a class. A lot of them simply discarded the mirrors in the trash can on their way out the door.

I think the Connecticut cops are doing it right using a meter to establish the true loudness of the vehicles, if indeed there is a legal standard of 90dB. Kind of like using a breathalizer for D.U.I.s. It takes all the subjectivness out of the deal. I sure wish they'd leave us alone, but it's a lot about revenue.

Many times when some type of enforcement gets stepped up it is because someone got a bug up their a** or there were complaints. This month we have to push the seatbelt enforcement.

People always thing it is money issue. If we give a correction notice it doesn't matter as long as the correction is made. Most of the tickets I write are either $88.80 or $114.00. We don't get all that money.

They're doing the seatbelt thing here too, ticket are 20.00, take a LOT of tickets to amount to much!

The loud pipe deal in Co Springs WAS from complaints, about all the asshats that thought they needed to leave the bars on Tejon St at full throttle so it would echo off the buildings!

Arkansas law is easy to enforce if you want to. It reads "every vehicle will have an original equipment type muffler so as not to emit excessive noise or smoke". (I paraphrased, but that is real close.) Yeah even glass packs on cars are illegal, but it is never enforced unless somebody is showing off in the wrong place, or they are worn out and extra loud.
