Default Stage One

Most people are doing a stage one With SE backplate. I like K&N filters.

Could I not replace stock filter with KN and get as good breathing as the SE?

I dont want to do the SE and then replace it with KN. I really dont like SE

filter.

You can buy the SE backplate by itself and add a K&N filter. I hear what you're saying about the SE filter but the SE backplate happens to be the best on the market. Any parts guy worth his salt can hook you up with the reset of the parts you need (o-rings, mounting posts, gasket).

The end cost (including the K&N filter) is about the same as the complete SE kit - maybe a little less if you're lucky. It turns out a really good way to go is to get the chrome SE backplate because it comes with some of the parts (head breather bolts - or what ever they're called) that the non-chrome versions don't include.

The Fuelmoto air cleaner uses a K&N filter. They also at a good price offer a choici in chrome, blackout and regular backplate. I agree that K&N makes a better filter.

There is the Stage 1 Big Sucker from Ness. It has a k&n type filter. I clean mine with the k&n charge kit. I thought it was a much better buy than the SE filter and it comes with a chrome back plate. I have not had any issues after 5000 miles.

Why is the backing plate on SE better than the factory plate?

I also have the Ness set up with K&N type filter. Does not require removal of the backing plate like the SE system. Works well for me and was about the same price.

Well, the factory "plate" isn't a plate. It's a box with 3 relatively small holes for air to "flow" in. A plate like the SE plate allows essentially free flow for air to the filter.
