Not sure if this is the correct place but can anyone tell me about the 1980 FLT...Is it reliable for longer trips, or should I keep looking. It is 30 years old...will I be sorry or is this a nice ride? Is this one of the old school Harleys that'll vibrate the fillings out of my head & leave my hands shaking after I take it out for a ride? Not trying to "bash at all, I like the look but have heard soooo many stories just trying to put it all in perspective. Any help will be greatly appreciated!
Ron, I had one of those beasts. In it's time, it was a good bike, butt ugly, but good. It was the 1st generation of the touring bikes we ride today. If the price is right, buy it, pull the motor and front end, and stick 'em on a 4-speed frame and 4speed wide-glide trees. Swap the rest of the parts for 4-speed stuff. Then go out and get a late model touring rig.
I see that there is no price. 30 years old, there will be issues. You make the call
It's the first of the rubber mounts, so your fillings are safe! However the mounts in that bike could be way past their best by now, as could be all the other rubber things on it (tyres etc), so if you buy it make allowance for giving it stacks of tlc before setting off on any grand tour!
The bike looks sweet , low mileage . I imagine he's asking a big buck for it . If you take a little longer shopping you can find a late model with higher mileage for the same money .
Good Luck
