I was just out having a nice afternoon ride in the country on August 9th. I came into a sweeping curve and got out a bit too far. Apparently the county had just filled in the shoulders earlier that day. A good size patch of fine gravel was on the road and I hit it at about 35mph. Don't remember much after that. A witness behind me said the bike flipped me off and we went our separate ways. I recall seeing a 4X4 sign post heading my way and I apparently hit it with my back, busting five ribs in 8 places. My left lung was punctured and collapsed. In addition, I have a slightly banged up spleen and kidney and road rash on both arms and head.
The witness said I tried to get up and get my bike. He told me to stay down and we tustled a bit until I realized he was right.
The officer on the scene called the ThedaStar Trauma helicopter which came and evac'd me out to the intensive care unit in Neenah. I remember saying something to the medic about it being my first chopper ride since Vietnam.
Spent 4 days in ICU before being moved to a general care unit. I was released Wednesday afternoon. Now I'm home to heal. Looks like it will be weeks before I can go back to work. Beats the alternative though. My bike is in the shop getting an estimate. I was told the fairing, windshield, gas tank and tour pak are banged up. Insurance will cover it all.
I can tell you that a helmet and body armor will be worn by me from now on. I'm too old to bounce around like that any more.
Wow....obviously glad to hear you walked away to live another day........so when you look back on the cause and effect of the spill what would you different if you could other than wear more protective gear? Hope you heal quickly.

I should have slowed more for the curve and stayed in farther.
Glad your are okay.........No helmet??? I made it once in an no helmet accident with a car......but, still do not wear a helmet?????????? I keep saying that I am but get on the bike and do not even think about it.
Glad your injuries were not worse. That sounds like a pretty nasty spill you took. No matter what you would do different next time, I have to wonder if the road crew or DPW resonsible for that stretch of road would do something different themselves next time. Like NOT leave alot of loose gravel on the road like that. I know we are responsible for ourselves first and foremost, but a little help from those that left the hazzard out there would have avoided the whole bad episode. Hope you heal up soon. Take care.
Glad you're not a statistic, Don.
When I see riders wearing tee shirts and bee nee helmets (which in the summer is practically everyone)......all I can think is if that guy ever goes down....he aint never gonna be riding in that outfit again.
Been in a full face helmet and jacket since day one of riding several years ago. 90 degree heat in my Joe Rocket mesh w/armor breathes like a t-shirt. I'm never uncomfortable.
I'll never understand why folks ride in t-shirts.....or shorts.....when a 20 mph crash will shed your skin like a cheese grater....amazing.
Sorry about your accident, Don. Hopefully you've learned a valuable and lesson and will make a speedy recovery and be out on 2 wheels soon.
