I put up with an erratic voltage guage on my 2001 FLHT for a long time .... right up until I had to replace my stator. Had a bolt back out of the primary chain tensioner that bounced around inside my primary and nicked the windings on my stator. It took a while but finally left me stranded alongside a lonely stretch of backroad. Some posters have commented that you can diagnose a fried stator by the unusual odor eminating from your primary, but I did not notice any unusual smells. I'd have someone check your charging system -- stator, regulator, battery, etc.
