Removed the lowers and to me it seems the bike is significantly cooler than with the lowers, specially now in the summer. Plan to put them back in the winter. To my surprise lowers provide a lot of wind protection. I forgot what it feels like to ride a naked bike. I have a new appreciation for how confortable we are with the lowers and the faring.
This is my first bagger and I am glad I DON'T have lowers - I came off a Wide Glide and although it had a windshield, I like the feeling of wind in my face and on my body. I test rode a bunch of baggers and I definately didn't like the lowers at all on the Ultras. Maybe because they made me feel cramped.
At least you can take them off and put them back on when you need them.
Many people ask me why I added lowers to my 2008 RG or do not remove them from my wife's 2007 Ultra. I keep them on year round for the very reason you stated - protection.
I say that every year for the 1st ride after I remove them for the summer. You'll get used to having them off then it will feel wierd and restrictive when you put them back on. I like it both ways, but have almost come to enjoy riding with them off more. I will say they are the single most effective way to prevent buffetting there is...VERY smooth ride.
I have had mine off a couple times and admit the extra flow of air on the legs on a real hot day is nice. I just leave them on now as it does seem like a more comfortable ride when doing extended trips on the highway.
