Default Vapor recovery system; beware

So I go to fill up my Ultra this morning at the local gas station. I remove the pump nozzle and turn it upside down slowly guiding it to my fuel filler hole. When it turn it right side up as it's over the fuel hole.. just in case there's a couple of drops that come out of the end of the nozzle.... a gusher of gasoline came pouring out of the end of the handle, where the hose from the pump connects to the handle...

I couldn't believe it ! My hot Ulra Classic just got a shower of gasoline running all over the side of the fuel tank and onto the engine....

I went inside and asked for a couple of towels and some water to get it off and asked to see the manager to let her know what happened. She was totally unsympathetic and stated that it's the vapor recovery system. The jack*ss before me over filled his gas tank. The extra fuel gets caught up in the hose and runs out a release valve in the end of the handle..

WTF ? Anybody ever heard of this

And in case any of you are wondering... I was off the seat standing on the left side of my bike..

I have had gas come out of the nozzle before putting it in my car. Never had it happen on my bike. Sucks. Good thing you used water instead of trying to wipe it off

I have never had that happen on at the Speedway on Moreland and Beloit. But at the Speedway on Greenfield and 110th, I have had that happen. Must be the Milwaukee County residents.....

Sounds like a way to get some free gas if you are thinking ahead of time, lmao.

The major factor in failing electric fuel pumps in full sized automobiles is overfilling according to the manufacturers.

Seems to me if they were run low or almost empty, they would overheat. And that being full would dissipate the heat.

But I am not a fuel engineer, lmao.

Thanks...but just to clarify, the gas didn't come out of the end of the nozzle where gas normally comes out of. It comes out at the other end. There's a valve at the end of the handle where the swivel connects to the rubber hose. So, where your hand and arm are holding the handle the gas comes flowing out there... all over your wrist, hand, and fuel tank.....

It happens all the time to me. I pull the nozzle out and hold it over the cement before moving it over my bike. That way it spills all over their place, right next to the sign that says they are not responsible for spills, kinda like BP. Too soon? Anyway, it is not much gas, but at least it is not on my bike.

In case you could not tell, I am not an environmentalist. In fact, I drive a Hummer, and not one of those little girlie Hummers either. So, please spare me the lectures about letting left over gas spill on the cement.

P.S. I carry a wash cloth in my touring pack just in case.

I've never experienced what happened to you but I have had gas run back out of the nozzle all over my bike.

I have gotten into the habit of holding the nozzle away from my bike and angled towards the ground and shaking it a couple times to drain any gas before bringing the nozzle over the tank.

You sound like my kind of guy!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's refreshing to know there are still some "sane" people in the world. The tree huggers and political correctness advocates are wearing me out!! Hooray for folks like you!
