Default When should tires be replaced?

Have 8200 miles on my SG. Will be taking a trip through Colorado, Utah, Arizona next month. Should I be concerned about tire replacement and how can I tell by examining the tire?

if they are 402's i think anything below 2/32 is asking for it. Unless you plan on changing it on your trip.

Use the penny test. Stick a penny in the treads and if you can see all of Lincoln's head then it's time for new rubber.

2/32?? Do you mean 1/16th of an inch tread depth?

Yes, but tire tread depth is measured in x/32 of an inch. If you had 4/32, you could easily say 1/8, but the standard for tire tread is 4/32. That way you don't have to worry with possible confusion with the mathematically challenged.

I haven't looked but doesn't our OEM tires have a wear bar on them?

If in doubt change em out. You don't need to be worrying about your tires on a long trip.

That's what I was going to say.

To the OP, if you are about to take a long trip, I'd advise going with new rubber if you are concerned with it. I think it will make the ride more enjoyable because it will ease your mind and also because your bike will most likely handle the road better if the tires you are running now have over 8000 miles on them. You can always schedule an appointment with someone on the way to have tires replaced. The problem with that is you will feel you need to be at a certain place at a certain time and I've heard of guys getting their tires put on rotating the wrong direction or something breaking during the tire swap and having to wait on parts being ordered to fix whatever broke ect. Smart bikers don't do much before going on a long haul. They do these things before going and get some time on the bike before the long trip gets started so they know everything is right before leaving or they just leave it alone until they get back home if they are comfortable with everything before leaving.
