a friend just bought a 07 Classic, 3700 miles, ordered aftermarket slipons and bought a Stage 1 AC. went to a few dealers checking on the Harley Stage 1 dload map.
the dealers are telling him that HD now is saying the dload is not recommended because the typical stage 1 dload will not be "tuned" for anything but screamin eagle slip ons. HD is saying it could cause engine damage due to running too lean.
I understand that a dload could be tweeked for each brand of slipon, but I feel sure that there has been thousands of stage 1 dloads to bikes with stage 1 air cleaners and aftermarket slipons with no engine damage after thousands of miles.
correct me if I'm wrong, but one function of the Stage 1 setup is to help the lean factory condition and the heat.
my 08 ran hotter than hell before I installed aftermarket slipons, HD Stage 1 AC and the HD Satge 1 dload. after that, it runs much cooler and runs fine, no popping, cracking, etc. no performance issues at all.
Sure would like to hear some feedback from people with the same setup and your experience.
Is Harley trying to sell more SE pipes, more race tuners or is my bike and yours gonna blow up ?
My last bike was a 2006 Nightrain with the 88 and a 5 speed. I had a forcewinder XR-2 intake, V&H big radius 2-2 pipes and the Harley SE stage I download and the bike ran great. It had 26,000 miles when i traded for my SG and it was still running strong and not to hot. I'm not sure if because of the cats in the 2010 touring bikes that the moco had to remap there stage I downloads to work better or if they are still using the same one for all 96 inch touring bikes? I have the stage I on my SG and was running the SE nightstick slip-on but it was just to hot so i but some Rinehart true duals on and getting ready to order a PCV from fuel moto just to be safe.
the down load can not be tweeked. it only returns your air fuel ratio to stock levels with s/e pipes and intake.if u use intake and exhaust that is more free flowing u will be back to lean.there are many other good tuning options that will allow tweaking for other changes, and get u running much richer than the download.
the stock afr is too lean from the factory, so returning to a too lean condition is a waste.do a real tune it will run better and cooler.heat is the #1 killer of air cooled motors.
