Looks fine to me. And....when I saw the title to the post, I opened it expecting to see someone nailing together a couple of 2 x 4's as guards. You relieved me!!
I don't see where they can protect the bags, the only mounting point is on the bottom where the tube is flattened out, I can guarantee you that won't hold up a 800# plus bagger as it's falling over. You need more than one mounting point because the bottom mount will just fold up without being attached at the upper frame. I don't mean to be kill-joy, but I wouldn't trust it to protect my bags.
I think you're a little wrong. I think the bag might get scratched at the corner some but I don't think the guard will just "fold up" and crush the bags. Why?
1) The bag has a bar that runs underneith it and the other side is attached to the fender/frame rail. If the front mount "folded up" it would push the saddlebag up because of the bar that runs underneath.
2) Because Street Glides don't have ANY guard and I know plenty (including my wife) that have turned the bike over and not crushed their bags. Scratched Yes. 800 pounds crushing....No. Plus I have not heard or seen a SG saddlebag mount "fold up" either. The OP's mount is at least better than a stock SG one.
3) The floor board and engine guard keep the full weight of the bike off of the saddle bag on an overturned bike. They take most of the brunt of the fall typically.
I think the OP did a fantastic job and considering all the SG's and RG's out there without ANY saddle bag guard...what he's made has got to be better than those and if you look, it actually looks like it does protect the front corner as well.
I never said the bag would be destroyed, I just don't think it would protect it the way the guards were meant to protect the bag, granted they should do slightly better than the SG-RG set-up, which by the way is what I'm running. I just don't want someone to be disappointed when their bag get's some damage in a tip over.
All input is appeiciated , i wont get mad at a little critisism as long as its positive . Like i said in my original post these were built for me and my bike ,i think the will protect my bags plenty and not fold up, but then again do any of us really plan on laying it down. I have layed it on its side but not with the new guards and hope i dont. This is just an alternative to the original design. Thought i would share in case anybody wanted do do something like this to there bike but , suggestions are welcome. Thanks
