Speed Sensor--Clean or Replace?
On the way back from a nice weekend ride and the speedo went out and after a forum search it seems clear it's my speed sensor. This wouldn't be a question, but I have a chrome cover over the top of the tranny and looks like a little PIA to remove so I need a consensus, clean or replace? What have been the success rate of just cleaning the darn thing: I'd hate to throw good money away on buying a new one if cleaning will fix it. I know this is just your alls opinion but that's what I need. Thanks, It was a HOT ride back from Fredricksburg, TX to DFW today like 99 degrees; not to done again anytime soon!
mine went out on my 98 last year.my sensor had filings on it when i took it out.i cleaned it up but it didn't matter.it was toast.the sensor was around $60 bucks i believe.it unplugs under the seat. the dealer i was at checked my speedometer out to make sure it was indeed the sensor.hope this helps you.
I have a 2000, mine bothered last year & I cleaned it & it worked until today. I don't have a cover so it's real easy to remove & clean it, but I'm thinking it's time to replace. Does anyone have a part # for it?

Anybody changed the VSS on an 09? Seems to me the starter has to come off. My speedo quits almost every time I wash the bike.(no pressure washer) Tech at the dealer says they sealed it up really well after the last time they fixed it. Im not happy about this.
I went a head and bought a new one to replace since the Dawg suggested it, and makes sense for a bike with 50k in miles. Upon getting into the change the first thing I saw was that there was A LOT of fuzz on the magnet. I did not even think about just cleaning it I just was prepared to replace it. The second thing I notced is that who ever designed the assembly of the bike never thought about how one would replace the speed sensor without removing the starter. They way the wire runs there seemed no way to slip the bulky ends out, so having the new one I just cut the wires and when I re-installed the new one running the wires in a more freindly route. Anyway speed now works, only took me about an hour of staying calm and patient. BTW the manual wasn't much help and made it seem like no biggy, just un-plug and replace, no mention on how the heck you could the plug ends to fit under the starter.
