Default stage 1?????

I heard you can run up to a certain size baffle without having to do a complete stage 1. Is this true? If so, what size baffe can you run w/o air/mapping?

On a stock engine, the air cleaner restricts air flow more than the exhaust. Forget about the Stage 1 (dealer) burn and buy a fuel management device like the Power Commander if you install a low restriction air cleaner.

Usually you're safe without re-mapping with just baffles or slip-ons. If you add the air cleaner kit too, then you need the download or a fuel management system. I would skip the download though and save for the tuner. You can then re-map for other future changes(i.e: cams, etc).

General concensus is that slip ons only does not require any fuel management work. Pick your flavor of choice and have fun.

Remember the maps are really a one size fits all kind of tune. If ya want your upgrade to really work well, get a dynotune from a reputable indy.

On a stock 88" I wouldn't go bigger than 2" no matter what, on a 96", 2.25". Any bigger will be a performance loss. You should not need to remap or use a fuel management system unless you change the air filter, also. HDs are restricted at both ends, if you only open up the exhaust, it is still restricted at the air cleaner or vice-versa. If you do both you should use a fuel management system and also whiten your teeth because everyone will see you smiling when you get the extra kick in performance.

I've installed a set of 4" '09 SE mufflers on my '09 Ultra Classic. I had a Stage 1 and download done and I couldn't tell any difference except the sucking sound from the intake when shutting the engine off. If I had to do it again, I wouldn't do the Stage 1.
