Default Add More $ or Trade? Need Opinions Please

Here's my dilemma:

My wife and I try to ride every weekend and now that both daughters are in college, we go visit them plus all the other trips we take on the bike. 95% of my riding is with my wife and something I am always cautious of is that she has had surgery on her back several years ago due to a compression injury. Well, after this past weekend’s trip, the wife's back is out!

Now I’m thinking the cool looking low riding SG is mostly at fault which I could dump another $2k (at least) into it but I really do not want to get further into a '08 model. It does “not” have passenger floor boards or a tour pack which both of would make her more comfortable plus I'm sure another $600+ for Ricor shocks would help but where would it stop?

She loved the '07 Ultra we had but we went for the sportier SG and now looking back, wish I would have kept it for her sake.

I've got an outstanding '08 SG that performs extremely well which has a lot of performance enhancing/reliability products for the engine and drive train plus it looks really good. It has a nice amp and 6 1/2" speakers, Sundowner seat, back rest, 21" front wheel bla, bla, bla...(see sig)

What is a bike like mine worth with the 113" engine (respectfully ridden and maintained) and all the other stuff on it? It only has 8000 total miles on the bike.

I know nothing stock is going to compare to the performance I have now but my wife’s comfort and her ability to ride with me means more than the performance.

Should I trade my engine off for a stock one plus $ and remove all the extras to use what I can on the new one, sell the stuff that does not fit and trade it in mostly stock? Or, do you think what I have will be recognized appreciatively by a dealer? What’s the trade in experience for a bike like mine?

I know I could try to sell it outright but I have the worse luck selling stuff and usually take a bath when doing so.

i pretty much have the samething except u have more inches in your motor. only thing i would say to u is do what your heart says if u feel she would better off on a ultra because of her comfort and her getting a rough ride. get the ultra u will have the cadillac of bikes and she would be very comfortable on a bike like that. my wife rides her own streetglide so i dont have that problem but in your case i would think about her. its a harley either way. good luck on your decision and be safe.

The way I see it, it's just a matter of time until everybody winds up on an Ultra. You can always build a nice motor for it and make it look cool, but the bottom line is comfort when you're sitting out on the road. For me, it isn't about the speed, it's about relaxing and having a good time. My Ultra looks cool, rides nice and it's easy on my body. Wifey likes it too. I think this may cost you!

Fact...you are going to take a bath. You will almost never get back what you have put into the Streetglide. Bite the bullet and buy the Ultra. As a previous psot said, "You eventually end up with an Ultra."

I agree with the previous posts. In the world of used bikes, you buy low and sell high. The blue book is what they are going to use. You may get a little better deal on a trade, but not much.
Seems to me that adding those mods that would essentially give you an untra would be the smartest way to go.
Keep your bike...no one is ever going to value it the same as you do.

Ha! That's my motto; buy high, sell low

I'm afraid you guys are all correct and I will take the big bath if I trade it in but then again, I have reached a point to where it pains me spending more $ on this bike since it's soon to be three years old in another month.

The wifey loves riding as much as I do so it's hard for me to ride off knowing she would like to be with me.

I guess I'll get the extra large tube of KY Jelly out before I head into the dealerships over the next couple of weeks

You have an '08 with 8,000 miles on it, and you've put a ton of money into customizing it. Why on earth would you trade it, especially knowing you won't get anything near what you want out of it?

If you want to turn your bike into an Ultra, get a tour pack, passenger footboards, and some taller shocks for the rear. For less than 2 grand, you'll have your bike, and the comfort you need for your wife.

I too have desegregating disks in my back and my Street Glide shocks were a bit to harsh, no matter what the air pressure. I went to my dealer and asked for some “Ultra shocks” he said he had just changed out somebody’s Ultra for the lower shocks because they wanted a lower stance. He sold them to me for $125.

This is the best thing I have done for my back. Rail Road tracks that I regularly ride across that would launch my butt off the seat with the stock Street Glide shocks, now I float across.

It also helped that I put an ’08 Road Glide seat on. It too has a little cushion and isn’t hard.

I would try new shocks of some sort, before trading. 8,000 miles is still a new bike to me.

Take care of the wife. She may be changing your diapers in the future. At some point the cool factor wears off and the comfort factor sets in. I wanted the SG too but when I decided comfort was a big factor I went with the EGC. I didn't need or want the CB or lowers so the EGC was the bike for me. But that black SG was really calling to me. I'm happy with my choice.

Hells yes.....I've put on 8,000 miles in the last 3 months!

I've had nothing but good luck with the Ricor shocks, but at $630, they're not the cheapest game in town.
