I have a friend that cut off the cross over pipe on his roadking, capped it with a flat piece of steel, now it looks kind of like a true duel set up. I'm not so sure he should have done that, sharp bend with stock exhuast now with cut off cross over, also took apart air cleaner and took off back so get's more air. He did not do any fuel management, kind of bang and sputters. Is he going to burn it up because its 2 lean? Tell me what you think? It's a 2005 road king.
If I understand what you are saying, all the exhaust is now flowing out hte brake side muffler; effectively what was a 2:2 system is not a 2:1? No problem removing the back of the air cleaner. He won't burn it up bus should get it tuned.
Personally, I wouldn't have done what he did. I would have left it alone until I could afford a Stage I upgrade, i.e., hig flow mufflers and SE air cleaner; then retune.
The rear cylinder is running rich, I'd presume. That bend is a killer. You might suggest to him that he replace the modified parts with stock ones again. They're cheap and plentiful.
I have a stock set off my '07 Ultra I'd love to get out of my garage. I'd even toss in a set of old SE Touring muffs.
If he would have done one or the other rather then both then he could have gotten away without tuning the fuel system.
I have seen many people do this same thing with their stock exhausts. They seem to work just fine but with any true dual setup you need to get the fuel system remapped to stop the popping etc.
I blocked off the crossover pipe on my 98 FLHRCI and it ran somewhat better but it already had a K&N so I ended up putting a tuner on it to get better A/F mixture, I'd think unless he has aftermarket mufflers it shouldn't matter much. Now if it has a free flowin set of mufflers gonna spit spudder and bet the pipes are turnin blue from runnin so hot. His toy to play with.
a friend of mine told me about a muffler shop that would do that for a lot less than the cost of true duals. They cut the crossover off, weld in some new metal and off you go... from what i have heard he has done it on a lot of harleys with no problems...
Hell ..... have him bolt up an old Barcalounger with the foot rest split .... (freeway pegs) for a solo seat, and a small Radio Flyer wagon (painted Okie-Chrome silver) for a rack ........ to add that 'real' redneck ambiance!!
