mine works well, I also was going to remove mine when not taking a long trip, as it is ugly. But, I got used to it and now just leave it on all the time and don't even pay any attention to it.
Not to be a party pooper, but my mount failed me in just the way you mention. The ball loosened up and it stripped out when I tightened it. No way to use it now until I get a new mount.
I ordered one after talking to a fellow HOG member , as he was quite pleased with his.
The U bolt mount doesn't look the greatest , but it works well and seems secure enough.
The ball mounts are actually covered with rubber , so they don't have to be super tight when it's setup.
I ordered my setup for a Nuvi 200 and later got a TomTom unit also.
It only cost around $10.00 for an extra unit mount , and I used the existing base and arm over again.
I feel that mounting to the bars probably vibrates less than a fairing mount , so even the cheap GPS units should last a while on our bikes.
Good value for the price to me.

I like my Ram Mount for my Garmin Nuvi 760... had it for a few years, and so far, no problems with it. I leave the ball mount attached to the left handlebar...
You can get other mount attachments to connect to the arm, besides the GPS cradle... I have a camcorder / camera mount as well.
Ram mounts come standard with Zumos and the older Quest series, and with these I don't think durability is something you're likely to have an issue with. I've used one for over two years now with no signs of loosening.
You can buy several base mounts including one that replaces the stock handlebar clamp (see below), a u-bolt type to clamp to the handlebar, and another that fits in the mirror hole near the clutch lever. The last will obviously work if you don't have mirror already mounted there, like with SG's.
If anyone is interested I'll take a photo of my mount setup tomorrow.
I just bought the Nuvi 1350, very similar to the 1300, and the Ram Mount for my 09 Streetglide.
I didnt like the look of the U mount so I got the Ball with the tab that installs in the hole the Mirror installs in. When I remove the mount all thats left is the small ball that is kind of hidden by the hand controls.
I love the set up so far but Ive only ridden once with it.
Also got anti glare screen protectors that help with the sun.
I have to chime in and say I have had one for several years and three different bikes and it always works great. Easy on and off plus holds very well. A+++ in my book.
"Pretty is, as pretty does." They are tough as nails.
The ball mount is nice, if you want to remove the mount often.
I never take mine off.
It's easy to remove the GPS when you want to 'hide' it.
I've had mine for 3 years...has outlasted 2 GPS's.
