Still working on my 99 ultra quiting problem. Thought I had it fixed but it guit again on me. This time it would restart and run about 30 sec. I finally beat on the dash a little, moved some wires around, and worked the main ignition switch back and forth from on to off a few times. It started up and ran fine the rest of the way home. Damndest thing I ever saw. Got to thinkin maybe it's the ignition switch? Took it out but I'm not sure it comes apart to take a looksee. New one is priced OUT OF THIS WORLD so I thought I would check and see if anyone has rebuilt these switches or am I going to have to get a new one. I hate spending that much money to find out it didn't fix the problem. It just takes a notion to quit. I can run 20 miles or maybe 30 sec. Checked the crank sensor, changed the main breaker (50 amp), checked all the wiring. Problem just started this spring. Never had it happen in the past.
I've seen this happen a few times.......
If you every worked on your handlebars and had the controls off, you may of pinched one of the wires leading to the kill switch.
Mine quit on me out at Sturgis, had to be towed to Rapid City HD for repairs. Parts AND labor ran $100.00 to replace the ignition switch. I'd bite the bullet and get a replacement, I thought the price was very reasonable.
Since you said you were able to wiggle wires and get results, and you think it's an ignition switch issue, you should first finding the connector that plugs the ignition switch into the main harness. Unplug it and clean and use some Dielectric Grease.
Thanks for all the input. I previously had checked all the connections and wiring but it happened again. I just ordered a new switch. I'll get that in and hope it fixes things. If not I'll be back on here asking for more help.
You can indeed disassemble the ignition switch. I did it on my 99RK. It is a very simple mechanism, and cleaning the contact points then switching one contact with another fixed an intermittent shut down on mine...
