You can click on the "Snap-On" in my reply and it should take you right to it on the Snap-On page. Snap-On calls it "Tool, Lock Ring, Fuel Tank, Harley-Davidson" it's $48. I bought it and the steering head bearing adjusting tool. I've always been a tool freak.
Doesn't everyone always say "Why didn't he use the search feature instead of starting a new thread." Here he probably did just that and you are giving him **** for that. Geesh what do you want?
What's up 05UltraBob, Thanks again for sharing the brains, love that pilot is again glowing green.
Gents, not really an expert here! But here's how I was able to remove and re-install the top cap retaining ring without banging on the tank, or getting that expensive ring removing tool...

I would like to extend a big ol' thank you for using the search function and adding some valuable information to an old thread. I will be needing this info and was very happy to read this thread today. Oh, and welcome to the forum!
I've used the "tap tap" method 3 times and it worked great. Unfortunately on the 3rd time I was careless and didn't have my tank protected. The chip is about the size of a green pea.
I've talked to a couple of painters and they want $450-$500 to repair. I got some touch up paint at the dealer and I'm messing with it myself without too much luck at this time. I'll cover it with a bullet hole decal before I pay that much.
Found the tool through George's Tools. Yep, $72 without shipping. I bought one anyway since I'll need it again at the 50, 75 and 100,000mi servicing.

to further add to this old/new thread, here is something else to throw in the mix. on my 2010, hd has 25k down for the maintenance interval for the fuel filter. but on my wife's 2012, the maintenance interval is now 100,000 miles. okay, so maybe there is a new, superpremium, 1/billionth micron fuel filter? nope, same part number. so why the new interval in maintenance? and suddenly i don't feel so bad about not doing mine 10k miles ago
