I have a 08 Electra Glide Classic with 18,300 miles on it. I noticed a howling sound coming from the primary area. When I disengaged the clutch this sound quit. I disassembled the primary and found the double roller beary on the clutch package had failed and was causing a rub mark on the inner primary. I spun the transmisson shaft and could hear the inner primary bearing making noise also. After removing the inner primary I saw that the bearing race on the transmission shaft was destroyed. I have always run Mobil 1 20-50 in the primary. When I spoke to the dealer He told Me that it was My choice of lubricant that caused this failure. I don't believe that is the case. I firmly believe that is in the bearings. The clutch pack bearing is a Koyo Japan 5207. The inner primary bearing is a INA USA HD 9231, F-553224. The bearing race that rides on the transmission shaft is a INA USA F556923102. I'm in the process of resassembling everything now. I feel that this is a HD problem and not a lubicant problem.
Dealer can't tell me it was my choice of fluids that made mine go away, well I guess he could try but would look like a dumbazz since I HAD been running syn 3 in all holes since 1k service up until this service trip. I took them the M1 and Redline in a bag to use this go around.
Yes I agree that the bearing retaining clip on the inside of the primary cover could be the culprit. I can't remember what position the clip was in when I disassembled it. When I put the clip back in I made sure its not covering the the oiling hole. I also wondered if that clip could vibrate and spin covering the oiling hole.
My inner primary bearing failed my '08 SG failed last summer @ 14k miles while on a trip. It was under warranty so I did not have to pay but the dealers invoice (attached) came to $415. They also replaced the primary chain tensioner which I thought was curious.
Are they replacing the same parts or upgraded parts? I am wondering if secondary failures are common.
Rocky Mountain H-D treated me pretty good by getting me back on the road in a few hours because I was a traveler. And with all the paranoia about voiding warranties I should point out that I was pulling a trailer and had a drive line failure.
The races are pressed together during service. Also note the outer race (right) has had the hard chrome delaminated from the rough bearing track right, to the shoulder.
This is the inner bearing. The ***** are pretty beat up, but not as bad as the outer.
Outer bearing. The cage could have been broken during disassembly. Note how pitted the ***** are.
I just ordered this bearing from Zanotti, and it's back ordered from Harley, with a release date of 9-10-10. I wonder if it's a revised bearing???
Still working on the bearing supplier!
Well the 9/10 release date has come and gone and they are still on back order and mine is on its 3rd week in the shop waiting for this 8967 bearing and no new release date being given.
My bearing must have been an old release then? I got it two weeks ago.
Of course - to save cost's dealers can use the cheapest delivery mode possible.
Hopefully you'll score a revised bearing.
It's worth it once it's all back together. Mine is smooth as silk. Especially with the SE Comp.
