I lost 3 heel shifters in the past year. Two of them while on trips out west, more than 1000 miles from home. I recently replaced the shifter shaft, so far so good.
I love the look; I know it's part of the Touring Bike to be embraced - but, just not comfortable for me - took it off; carry it in the saddle bag . . just in case!
i dont mind mine. plus i ride with some nice cowboy boots and dont want to mess the toe up. but then again, my feet are on the small size 8.5, so i dont worry too much about getting my foot trapped
Mine fell off. I was pist that 2 dealers wanted to sell me 1 for $45.00 but would not replace under warranty (1700 miles). Then they excuse it as a 'Milwaukee Vibrator' like I am supposed to expect stuff to fall off. So, I finally found a decent dealer in McHenry Illinois who warranteed it. Not the extra shift piece I put on new for $15.00 and not the screw, but at least I got the lever for free. So, buy a 5/16 18 screw 1" long, locktite it and fully cinch it down. Then you should have 1/4" exposed above the lever. Get an Acorn nut and loctite that guy on there - you s/b OK.
First time mine fell off my 09 Ultra was on the way out of town from Central Fl to Texas a month ago. The movement arm separated from the inner shaft ( by the cylinder heads ). Tensioning Bolt was still tight and in place on the movement arm. Stopped in Gainesville and replaced the shaft. Made it to Tx and on the way home in Scott, LA I had the Movement arm replaced because it happened again. Bolt was still tight and still in the arm. Last night it happened again ... Same MO. The ONLY way the arm can move past the recessed groove in the shaft with the bolt still in place is if their tolerances are wrong. I think H-D has an issue here they better look at pretty quick. I will be taking it all apart and doing some measuring later this week to see what the core problem is. I know my local dealer isn't smart enough to figure it out. All they will do is swap parts and call it good.
Simply removing the Heel shifter arm won't solve a thing because the problem is on the other side of the shifter shaft.
More of the SAME **** from Harley Davidson.
I put two onto the roadside "HD parts department" along Hwy 101; whereabouts who knows.
I gave up after the second attempt; yes I used lochtite, and went with the $25 chrome spacer.
Doesn't this HD nonsense get under your skin?
