Default starter issue

Anyone else having this issue? We put on 300 mi. yesterday, out of about 4 or 5 stops, when I went to start my 07 FLHX the starter does not engage or the gears clash, it happened twice. It makes one hell of a lot of racket, does not sound good. Do I need a new starter or something else. It has been doing it all summer, when the bike is cold or warmed up. Any ideas, Thanks

sounds like the starter drive clutch internally. they can be replaced instead of the complete starter motor.

Double check all your electrical connections. Sometimes you wont get the full cranking amps with low battery or loose connections,

Make sure your starter bolts are not coming loose. I had starter problems 2 years ago on a trip to N. Carolina. turns out The factory didnt put lock tight on the bolts and they backed out after a few thousand miles. No cost to me everything was under warranty just a big PITA...

Check out all of the above...and you may want to look for missing teeth on your ring gear..

Hopefully it's the starter bolts. If it was the starter clutch the starter would spin without turning the motor over. If the starter gears sound like they're clashing, the starter drive gear may need replacement. I had a starter drive gear rounded (worn) and the teeth could not engage the ring gear. Made big noise. If not the starter bolts, you're starter is repairable. The starter bolts are grade 8, and I don't reuse grade 8 bolts. The new factory bolts came with thread locker already applied. There's the option of using the high-torque starter as well. Edit- Just saw the service bulletin- looks like the most promising answer.
