About 3,000 miles since rebuild. I cleaned all of the valves of carbon and replaced oil seals. I noticed the one of the keepers I put on was on wrong so I fixed it before I buttoned it all back up. It has been using way to much oil since. Reminds me of what my dad used to do in Jersey when he was a kid. Go to the junk yard and buy a car for $50. get 5 gal of gas and oil and run it hard through the woods with only a hand brake. Seems like I have to keep a couple of quarts handy if I go anywhere over 100 miles just in case. Yeah the rear base gasket leaks alot but not to use up that mush. I noticed the fitings on the oil filter were leeking so I fixed that. And here is the biggest "F" up. I know what you are all thinking. When I bought oil instead of looking closely at the quart I just grabbed 20W-50. After using it all up I noticed it was not 4 stroke but regular stuff. I made sure that I have used 4 stroke since and changed the oil a couple of times. After all of that I still use to much oil and get smoke and alot of noise from somewhere. Can the

Yes. The valve guides could be worn also. And you could have some getting in from the seal between the head and cylinder [remember, no external oil lines] with out the gasket being blown, but that would be rare. The breather in the cam case timed right? If you got the plastic breather it could be on its way out and sending a little oil back into the intake track. How do the plugs look?

The first time I checked them about three weeks ago they were really bad. I was suprised that they worked. White and brown ash gunked all around it on both plugs but more on the front than the rear. I cleaned them and put them back in. Rode to work and back home (about 30 miles one way) and they were black. Sooty, but not wet.

O.K. I have some pics of the front and rear spark plugs. I had turned the top screw a little on the carb (clockwise) because I knew that it was running rich. The knocking is in the last two pics. So now, to me anyway, the front spark plug looks o.k. The right portion on the back plug looks like what it did before but before you could barely see the electrode it was so bad. They both look cleaner than what they did after looking at them three weeks ago. If you look above the chain on the next to last pic there is a line and a little nick right before that one. No thats not a shadow. Thats a gouge from the chain. Hope that was where the knocking was coming from and the last pic shows how bad the chain was loose. I have a new shoe for it so that is going in as well as adjusting it. Still leaves the heavy oil consumption and the smoke. Still working on that part.
