Harmless juvenile rat snake. Glad he got away, as they are beneficial. Most of these are very non-aggressive and can be handled if you don't grab them. I once saw a very large rat snake about 4' long crossing the street of a nearby subdivision, so I gently picked her up and placed her in my saddlebag, then let her go at my house. Rat snakes are welcome here, rats are not.
Glad you saw him before you sat down. I am not a big fan of snakes. If I see them first I am ok. When they see me first I usually scream like a girl. LOL. Reminds me of the time I was swimming across the Shagras River in Panama several years back. We were swimming across under a full moon, about half way across, I look up at my rucksack, and there staring me in the face is nice ol' water snake. Now on land a feller has a place to run when needed. Out in the middle of the water at night I had no wear to run. It about scared the crap out of me. I gently pushed my ruck as far away from me as I could, and continued to swim. Luckily, I had a long enough lanyard so I could get away from it. I guess he got bored. After what seemed like eternity, which was probably less than a minute, it slid off my ruck, and went about its mary way. Needless to say I was pretty glad to get out of the water than night and onto dry land.
Well to beat it all, we were walking down a trail the next day and stopped to take a peek at the river to see if we could gauge our location on the river. My buddy pulls back some branches and out there on a limb was a huge python just hanging out. Needless to say we didnt peek out there any longer.
