I've run K&N Filters on my MX & Harleys for years and have never oiled them between cleanings. It acutally doesn't make any sense; in order to properly oil the filter it should be removed from the bike. Thus, if the filter is removed why not just clean it?
There are two types of Screaming' Eagle air filters out there, ones that require oil and ones that do not. The easiest way to tell is it will have that stamped on the air filter; so make sure to check for the note before you oil the air filter.
Adding oil to a K&N air filter filter (or an air filter made by K&N) between cleanings is not recommended and is needed because the K&N air filter oil will not come off the media (the extra engine oil from the breathers will, but not the air filter oil). Adding more air filter oil to the filter without cleaning the filter can cause the filter to be over oiled and possibly restrict the air flow. The only time that you would want to oil the air filter is during the cleaning process. For more information on how to clean a K&N air filter filter, check here: http://www.knfilters.com/cleaning.htm
There are some cases where the oil will look like it has run off of the filter if the filter is exposed to the sun. This happens because the UV rays from the sun cause the dye in the air filter oil to fade. the filter media still has oil on it, it is now just clear. So in this case you will also not need to oil the filter between cleanings.
