Default Primary Fluid Change Question

Getting ready to do this service on my '09 RKC. Lots of good info getting the cover off. I would have never guessed that it would be a problem. After I get the cover off what do I look for? The service manual isn't clear. Is there a sight hole or some kind of level mark? Also where do I pore the fluid? I've never been in there before and I don't want to assume something and hose it up.

Thanks,
Jim

Just pour the fluid in thru the hole left by removing the derby cover. Use a funnel. Holds about 38 oz.

If you don't have one, go to walmart and buy a small end funnel about 10 to 12 inches long. the end will fit in the area between your clutch assy and the housing. maybe not at the bottom, but in at about 7 or 8 oclock position. Pour in 38 oz of oil. If you don't want to measure it. Just pour in enough to come up over the bottom edge of the clutch basket. Put a little lube or grease on your o-ring gasket and tighten according to the sequence in the manual.

Is the hole the same size as the derby cover? Also any special care with the gasket. The manual says to replace it.
Thanks,
Jim

I always do my primary on the lift you see in my sig pic. You need the bike upright when you put fluid back in. otherwise it will run over the bottom edge of the hole where the derby cover goes.

Since HD started using O-ring gaskets on the Derby covers, I reuse them a few times. I coat the gasket with some grease, install and torque according to sequence in service manual.

Mine was leaking all over the place after my last oil change. I drained it and replaced it with a red 75W so I could see where it was leaking from. My manual for an 06 street glide says 34 oz's. Since I've put the 75 in no leaks. But ever ones comments made me think (38oz). I had the oil change done on the road. Could it have been over filled by the independent mechanic and that caused the leak?

On filling the primary I took a two liter plastic coke bottle and cut the bottom off flush with a knife. Then cut a 3" C shaped cut out of the bottom. Push the bottle in place with the nozzle end. Pour the oil in the opening worked great.
