my 06 ultra with 5k on it does the same. my oil light has come on before at idle, its in the shop now because of several loud valve noises. 80 mph and you can still hear them.
I am not sure anyone understood my question. I never worried about it running 3lbs....thats kinda normal.....I am worried that it no longer runs 3lbs it now runs 15 to 18 at idle. This increase came on all of a sudden. Its kinda funny that I am worried my bike has too much oil pressure at idle.....but I had a SB400 that I built once that all of a sudden started running 60+lbs at idle, when it had been running a constant 20 at idle. Less than 4 passes later the cam seized and broke in half ruining a few pistons and more than a few valves. The best we can determine a cam bearing spun in the hole blocking an oil galley, causing the increased oil pressure and eventual failure. I guess I am wondering if I have a similar problem now.

I asked several long time techs, and even changed from syn3 to amsoil, it runs at the lowest mark above 0 at hot idle, and this has been the same on 2 different bikes. I think its more a gauge problem than a pressure problem.
Don't forget to check the oil pressure sending unit. These can give all kinds of false readings. I talked to a guy with an 07 Street Glide and his sending unit went out already.
I had my oil light come on on my 05 Road King Classic at idle. I brought it to the dealer and they found the oil over-pressure spring was defective. They replaced the cam support plate (under warranty) and it has been fine since..
the crankshaft and bearings are a different design than an automobile.harley uses what looks like a wheel bearing, meaning its a roller bearing, not a babbit type bearing.too many places for the oil to escape through to hold very much pressure under hot conditions.my 06 ultra doesnt have enough to read on the guage after its ridden for a long distance.i have ridden and wrenched on my own since the early 70s.and i havent saw many that hold a high pressure after its ridden a ways.

The explanation I have been given for Harleys running lower oil pressure than a car is due to the roller bearings used in the engine, as opposed to the shell bearings in a car. I was told by an old Harley mechanic that higher oil pressures will cause the rollers to skid instead of roll as they were designed to do. Anybody else ever heard that theory?
