Default 5th gear whine
O.K. I posted this on another site:



5th gear whine
So I noticed in the latest edition of "American Iron Motorcycle Bagger" magazine that Baker has come up with a fix for the notorious 5th gear whine in late model bikes. It looked fairly complicated and no price was quoted, still if I won the lottery.......I'll just have to live with the Redline solution.Craig

It's about $900. Not cheap, and a press is required. Might be better to retrofit a 2010 HD 5th gear and mainshaft?

The fix is called an Ultima six speed. $599 shipped, LOL

Yup! All factory 6 speeds from 2007 - 09. HD redesigned 5th gear to helical cut in 2010. Most likely because of all the complaints. It only took em 3 years to hear us!

In my opinion, it simply took them 3 years to run out of their stock of straight cut gears. I have no reason to think that they do anything just to make us happier. Just saying.

I guess that after owning a Valkyrie with square cut gears, I don't mind the whine. It reminds me that I still have 1 gear to go.

Probably my fault, I didn't know it was something I was supposed to complain about.

Some do - some don't. Complain that is.
I never liked the sound (still don't), but it's just something you get used to.
