I heard it clears up after 4000 miles.
Yep, I'm sure HD says it's normal noise till you hit 4,000 or is it 40,000 miles???? HA!

It is not that simple. The inner primary is different in the 96.. clearances would be different. Also mounting may not be compatible with the earlier tensioner.

If you really think that is it, then why not change it back to pre 07 style, gasket,1.5 qts fluid and the part, less than 100.00 could cure your problem. or upgrade to the hyd. unit many owners are raving about.

As all of us with the bikes giving the problem know, it is when the bike heats up. I believe the primary chain tensioner is the cause when it gets hot. It's seems after the bike gets so hot the tensioner is losing the proper tension, then the chain is not tight enough. 5th gear shows it more bacause of the straight teeth. 6th gear it is not as bad the teeth being at a angle mesh smoother. My bike is great when it's cold, I don't mind the whine in 5th. When things go bad is after it heats up.

That is what I thought and started to do. The '07s have a different inner primary and you can't bolt up a tensioner for earlier year model. I even checked into changing the inner primary, but the starter is different on the '07's. I emailed HAYDEN about a chain tensioner but they haven't emailed me back.

Just for chits & giggles and this is a true story,When I complained about the clatter to the owner of the HD dealer I bought my 07 RKC at, his respose was just like this>
"Well heck man you got a $20,000 bike there, you need to run that good gas in it. You can't be running any of that cheap stuff in there."
My response was "What the hell?!? Is Harley making GAS now?" LOL
I forgot to mention to him earlier that I was a 1987 graduate of The American Motorcycle Institute in Daytona Beach and went through the Harley class also. Once I informed him of that and added I wasn't a total frickin idiot he suggested we fill it with synthetics on the first service and see what happens. I agreed to the synthetics and it still clatters and now it stumbles on occasion. Even with the good HARLEY gas! LOL
I think he was suggesting that it was spark knocking due to cheap gas. In my opinion a stock street bike should run on any readily available gas.
Actually I do run 92 with a tube of "Rocket Fuel" octane boost.

I usually run 92 octane in my bikes. 91 should be just fine. Of course, on a very hot/humid day I would bump it up to 92 if you can. I beleive my 07 owners manual says to run the highest available octane.

I have also noticed that my rpm's vary from time to time at idle. Between 900 and 1200 (even after the bikes nice and warmed up) while sitting at a light or stop sign looking down at the tach. It does it more so then on my 05. Anyone else notice this?
