BAD COMPENSATOR? Who would ever have thought. LOL Hope that does it, then these guys can get their bikes fixed and get back to riding.
ORIGINAL: darkhorse_ryder
07 ultra...had knocking in 5th gear and 6th gear....took in for 1K service and told them to check out this noise...got the call today that I have a bad compensator assembly and several parts are to be replaced...hopefully this will quiet it down...will repost when I getter back
No sweat Pitt... as much as it might sound like I'm pinging on you guys with problems, I'm really not. I'm just incredibly thankful that I'm not having any problems (yet) with tranny noises. Since I bought the CUSE2 I've put 2100 miles on it and had to replace the Idle Control Sensor. The starter "knock" has definitely gotten a bit louder since day one, but still not like something is going to come flying out of the bottom end any moment... I'll point it out at next service interval or when I go to get my new pipes put on. In contrast my 03 RKC had several items replaced (including the engine mount) by the 1000 mile service. HD or the dealer dealt with every problem, even the ones I created... LOL!
My spin on it is that HD will make good, given time, if it's a repairable "design" issue (can ya say recall?). Then it'll be up to the dealers/stealers to make good with their customers and the only way that's going to happen is with some honest to goodness face time... the last thing a dealership wants is an angry customer talking loudly about problems within earshot of other customers while standing in the shop, on the sales floor, in the parking lot, so on and so forth. HD may scan this forum from time to time, but you can be sure there are very few dealers reading these posts.
Here's to crossing paths with all 07 owners ON THE ROAD - WITH SMILES ON THEIR FACES!
Wow thats great, some guys here have had these noises for well over a month and a dealer finally changed something!I really hope thats it.HD has let this problem harm new sales,**** off many faithful supporters, customers for a 100 dollar part.We will see.My phone should be ringing soon w/ word of a fix.
We bought a 07 Ultra Classic 2 weeks ago. The day my husband rode it home he said he was hearing a noise in 5th gear. I told him he was probably just hearing things, then I get on here and I read about all these 07 doing the same thing. We took it back a few days later to have the accessories added and told the Manager about the noise. He took us in his office and showed us a letter from Harley stating they knew about it and that they were trying to find the problem. He told us to ride thing and he felt sure that when Harley finds the problem there will be a recall.
HD of Maryland, in Elkridge....
I really hopes this is the problem but still have some doubts since it seems like the problem is common to so many folks....and if it is a defective part who is to say that they will not install another bad part....but that is getting to far ahead...at least my dealer has recognized that I have an issue and is attempting to make it right...will keep you all posted when I get it back....
I chnaged out tranny oil to AMSOIL Hevy Duty gear and am taking on a 300 mile trip today with wife on back. I test road it last night and the tranny gear whine was less, however the clattering was still there just as it ever was. If the compensator is the issue then that should be an easy fix! Let us know darkhorse what the results are... ELKRIDGE MD is right up the road..
