The 5th gear whine is said to be normal and I dont really have an issue w/that.Actually mine seems pretty quiet lately.the other noise is my concern and HD is combining all these noises, whines under one issue. The rattle noise doesnt appear to me to even be a trans issue,It seems to me to be motor or traveling primary noise.Guys ere have said they dont even have the 5th gear whine-thats rare if true.

OK - I've put 700 miles on the new ultra now - no whine - no clatter - no nothing - but goodness...

Good luck you guys - if this thing start sounding like a box of marbles - I will be more than pissed.... It makes normal Harley noises - but I've ridden a bunch of them and it is less than the 06's I rented last year (3 Ultras) and the long legs on this 6 speed make it absolutey awesome on the interstate.

If this thing had some pipes on it I wouldn't even here the top end... Sweeet.

Hope you get yours fixed - I'd take it out and thrash the **** out of it till it died while under warrantee. I bet I could kill it dead in a month - or have a bunch of fun trying. Definetly kill it in 24 months - even if it was flawless

Well all I can say for you is wonderful. But how does that help those that have a rattle box and others that want to buy one. ? Would you buy one after these problems ? I think not.

I could agree with you Pittguy, but mine only clatters in 5th. Varience in primary chain tension perhaps?

Mine is fine, the slight sound difference in 5th is no problem as you have to really listen for it, I won't call it a WHINE because a whine would start low and get louder, it is a constant sound in 5th and nothing at all to worry about as to falure, and harley did it for a reason. This is what they say, The new 96 has a lot more torque than the 88, 1st gear and 5th gear are straghit cut gears which are much stronger than heli cut gears, since 1st is subjected to more forces, take off and downshifting they used a straghit cut for it, 5th is the upper touring range where you use it more than any other gear and for roll on power, so again they used the stronger straghit cut gear. Sound thinking to me but I bet they change later to stop the WHINE not so much of the trans. but those customers who are not happy with it.

I declined the delivery of my 07 Road king classic due to all the problems with the trans. I was finally told by the dealer who was told by HD that it is a chompinsator sprocket. What ever that means. I cant see spending 20 thousand on a noise that you have to live with. Are there any 07 road kings with out this problem? I have save for a long time to buy a HD. Just my luck. congrats on your bike.

sound goes away around 100,000 miles...just pretend its not there and ride like hell! Maybe that noise that is explained to be just a noise the new motor makes wont destroy your engine! and then again, maybe not....

Too bad! the noise is very very minor, at least on mine. That sucks you came here and read all this stuff, you could have gotten your bike and never noticed anything. You would have been in the wind with the biggest smile on your face.

I agree to read this forum would make you think there are thousands of unhappy buyers when its more like a handfull that post over and over. Sorry for their problem but I garantee harley will make it go away given a little time, if your skerred away by buying a bike that MIGHT have issues dont buy a motorcycle cause its not just harley, read the goldwing/vtx/yamaha/suzuki or any other forum they all have issues! harley every year has some and they always get resolved, the 06 had a bunch, took a little while and they cured them all.

yea gunrunner, in fact I think some of the posts are just trolls trying to make themselves feel better because they bought/ride a copycat inferior bike. How many people did you talk out of buying a harley today phil? I heard that Victory will take Harleys in on trade but not Victorys.
