I was in a bind and appreciate all of the responses. I changed the oil out but did not have another filter. I will take care of that when I get home. I was running Mobil 1 20w50 and when I checked it, the level was fine but the oil ran off the dipstick like water. I was in stop and go traffic for about 40 min but after I changed oil I was able to jump on the interstate and the oil pressure was fine. I did not respond because I was too busy trying to resolve my situation. Hopefully you will never need assistance and get self serving comments from other members on the forum. Thanks to those who tried to assist.
I think I hit the nail on the head. Another problem I had after mine did that is when cold after firing it up I had a noisy lifter but went away after start up, I thought I would be tearing it down to replace lifters. I changed the oil again and that went away, it must have been a piece of crap hanging the lifter up and the oil was draining out at night. I mention this just in case you develope a similiar issue so you dont freak out.

contrary to popular belief, not all people are able to sit on the forums and wait for an answer to their post. sometimes i'll post and won't be able to check the forums until the next day at the earliest......
I also have a flhtk and mine runs really hot, and if I am in stop and go traffic I really cant turn the bike off, my wifes 09 ultra has no problems at all. I am thinking of installing a ultra cool, I love the bike but need to address the heat issue. Bikes kicks down to 1 cylinder way to often.
I am assuming this is a 103 with an oil cooler? Synthetic oil, especially full synthetic like Mobil 1, does not break down with heat. It will thin out, as that is what oil does when heated the heck up, but after it cools it will thicken back up and should be all normal again. If you change the oil everytime you sit in traffic for 40 minutes you may be changing oil every day. The oil pressure gauge (which is not totally accurate by the way) will show low oil pressure when the bike is heated up, but the engine is getting oil.

isnt that what its supposed to do when its hot? if its real hot than it would come on more so.
yes I suppose your right, I guess I just am getting use to the heat issue, I traded a 06 for the 2010, all I know is the 88 ran much better in traffic.

I ride quite frequently with two other guys on '09 baggers. One has a 103" (no oil cooler) and the other is a stock 96" with Woods 6-6 cams like my bike.
Sitting at a light, the 96" always seems to go to one cylinder, while the other two bikes take far longer to get there. All three bikes were tuned by the same guy.
I suspect the cylinder head temp sensor has some variance from the sensors on our bikes causing the bike to think it's too hot. I suspect the same is possible with an oil pressure gauge.
Given the info that the OP had, I would also have changed out the oil. Watery oil is no bueno. Cheap insurance.
I run Redline in my bike, summer or winter. Never had any issues, but I haven't seen Arizona or Nevada heat either...
