I've run HD oil which I don't like at all, I've run Mobil1 which is my 2nd choice, I know guys that run other oils also, but I like Amsoil better than all the rest, if a oil turns a little dark that doesn't mean it's not working, send it off for a test, does it smell burnt or does it feel gritty or not as slick as it was when it was put in, thats what sold me on Amsoil was it was as slick when I took it out as it was when I installed it, there nothing wrong with other oil brands it's just choices that we all make, personally I have had good luck with Amsoil, my trannys shift better and were quieter than any of the others that I tried, and every one of my freinds that I told of Amsoil tried it and love it for the same reason, most oils will turn in color but I've heard that if they don't there not working to clean carbon and sludge away from internal parts, a great site for oil info is bobistheoilguy.com, you can look at UOA's until your eye's cross.

Exactly. When you drain oil, you want it to be dark. That means it's cleaning. those that say "my oil was as clean as when I put it in" either aren't running their bikes at all, or are using oil that isn't cleaning the engine. I tend to think that it's an exaggeration since the oil we all use is the "best" out there and some feel compelled to justify their choices by stating that their oil doesn't turn dark at all (even though it is supposed to).

I know any oil that's doing it's job will darken as the miles roll on, But I'm talking Black! I couldn't see the oil stick through it! That's not normal! Plus my engine was getting louder than normal. I'm not an expert. Never have been and never will be, but I have an extensive backgound in Mechanical trades and dealt with a lot of research on different brands and types of oils. I know Amsoil has a good reputation for quality Oil. Never liked the way it's sold, but I've used it. I think Mobil1 is just as good..not second! As is most other Synthetic oils. I'm just concerned when I see oil get this black this quick....just saying!
I'm new to the forum and to the joy of riding HDs. I have an 08 FLSTC and a couple of questions:
1. Pros and cons to mobile 1 20w50 syn in all 3 holes?
2. How do I know if I have 96B motor?

You know you have a 96B, because it happenned to fit on your soft tail frame.
No "pro's" about same oil in all three holes. All "cons".

Only the Softails have the 96B model. The "B" has a counter-balance in the motor while the 96 does not. The 96B is not rubber mounted to the frame.
The Dyna and Touring model use the 96 motor without the counter=balance and they are rubber mounted to the frame.
At idle the softail's handle bars will barely shake because of the smoothness of the motor where as the Dynas and Tourers will shake the handlebars. Once under way and the RPMs climb you will not know the difference. I have owned both.
Do a search on the oil questions. It is and has been discussed many times here in this forum. There is no right or wrong answer, just many, many different opinions here. You will have to choose for yourself.
