I took my bike in to the dealer today and one of their techs took a look at it. They heard what I've heard for some time now - a knocking sound coming from in the transmission.
The tech suggested I not worry about it - "it's the shifter dogs knocking while the bike's in neutral"
Anyone ever hear of this before? I've been riding Harley's for 20 years and never heard this noise before. Good news - I still have 14 months of warranty left but . . .

I think I would get a second opinion. It is not normal for the transmission to knock when in neutral. I would be concerned about taking it on any kind of trip for fear of being stranded somewhere.

Yeh - exactly. I'm going to go back tomorrow and talk to the service manager - or take it to another dealership.
If the shifter dogs are knocking in neutral, then there is a problem causing it...
When in neutral the shift dogs should be clear of the gear they mesh with when a gear has been selected. I'd go to some one who wants your warranty work. Actually, I would pull the tranny apart and find out what the problem is myself...
I have a 2012 Electra Glide ultra limited with 200 miles.. It has developed a knock in the transmission and is very noticible at idle with the tranny in neutral.. Pull in the clutch and the noise stops.. Until the bike gets hot , the noise can be heard while riding and then goes away when the drive train gets hot.. The dealer adjusted the clutch and it went away for about 10 miles and now is back.. The dealer says they can put in a heavier tranny fluid to help cover the noise and I say bs..Fix it !!!!!! Anyone else having the same issues with knocking coming from the transmission ?
Wih all the crap that I hear of that the dealers push off as "oh thats normal, they all do that" I am never going to buy a new bike. If there was a clunk or rattle coming from my transmission, I would want it fixed. Nothing would put me more on edge then thinking that this trans is going to come apart or worse, lock up on me someday.
