no such thing as the right rpm. down hill off throttle 1000 rpm is fine in 6th, steep hill wide open 3000 rpm might be too low. listen to your engine, if it's struggling, bucking, not accelerating..... shift down....

Hey gasman ---- I have an 09 EG Classic also. 1st Harley for me. I'm solo about 99% of the time & if I can stay over 2000, I've used 6th alot. BUT, look at the tach when you're doing 70 to 75. It'll be at least 2500 in 6th anyway, so I went back to using 5th until I get up to 65 or 70.

Riding flat terrain, I keep the engine at a minimum of 2200 RPM‘s.

My rule is no 6th gear unless I'm over 65mph and 70mph if I've got some weight on the bike. Up hill calls for down shifting though.

When your cruising along at 2000 RPM, twist the throttle, you should be able to tell that the motor is struggling. That noise/shake/knock you feel is lugging, don't do it.

According to Donny Peterson, the Twin Cam should be reved higher than an Evo would be. He also stated that 6th gear is useless unless cruising at high speeds...
