How much of the increases are due to the new curve ($150 download from the dealer!!) and how much is due to the air cleaner and slip-ons? I've seen pix of Stage I air cleaner plates and they sure look a lot like the stock one.

The dealers generally charge $150 for the stage I download. Whether or not it's needed is debatable. The riding magazines all say that the closed loop bikes can all adjust for both exhaust and air cleaner changes. Prior to 07, with the bikes in open loop fuel injection, you could generally do either exhaust or air cleaner, but not both.

A friend of mine is a harley tech, and he says the only thing the stage I download does is to raise the rev limiter. A much better idea is to use a Power Commander or something similar, that will actually customize your fuel map to your bikes configuration.

I also have a 08 ultra and installing the stage 1 currently. I have the vance and hines installed last weekend and am planning on doing the air filter and tuner this week. Call Jamie at fuel moto and tell him what your setup is and order the power commander V retro for your year. my pipes sound sweet but i need to get used to sound difference. The wife says it sounds like a harley should and can't wait for the rest to be installed. I'm assuming money well spent.

It's totally worth it, if you consider a Stage 1 to be an AC, pipes and some type of EFI control device, like the Power Commander and a Fuelmoto map.

You'll get more power at the lower rpm range (I did on my 07) and it makes a big seat of the pants difference. Also less heat. Add an oil cooler to get a perfect combination.

I ride an 08 Ultra
I ride an '08 Ultra too and changed out my stock AC for the HD SE air cleaner and back plate recording the difference in VE's for both systems. I got no change in many rpm/map cells and up to about 3% in others.

Worth it? You'll have to decide...
