I have a 08 UC and the rear shifter arm that connects to the shaft to change the gears is starting the strip. I was told that on 08 and later the primary has been cut out so the arm can be replaced without removing the primary. The person who told me this makes a aftermarket shifter arm that comes in 2 pieces to resolve the issue of this replacement for 07 and earlier models so the primary does not have to be removed. He told me he would like to sell me the part, but does not think i need it. Does anyone know if the rear shifter arm on a 08 ultra can be removed and replaced without removing the primary? I have not gotten a chance to look at the service manual, but (3) Harley dealers said that the primary has to be removed to replace the shifter arm.
This is the first time I have heard of that. I have done them while the primary was still on. You will need to buy a new bolt and use never seize. Using a swivel with the proper allen/socket torque the crap out of it. I have used this method and had real good results. Sorry never heard of being able to pull off the arm without the primary coming off but I have not owned a bike that new.
Every G.D. part of my linkage has stripped out....except that one!
Just today I replaced the shifter 'shaft', last week I replaced
the inside 'arm'. Last year I replaced my heel/toe shifter and changed to heim-
connectors.
I gotta SAVE-UP! LOL
Here is the site for the guy who make the better lever..he was very helpfull and is the one who siad i did not need his part because my bike was an 08. looks like a nice product.....

Does anyone have any knowledge of this repair?
I'm not familiar with the 08, but on my evo,not only do you have to remove the primary, you have to slide the gear assembly from the tranny.Big job as i remember.
Yes you can get a regular bolt at Loew's vs. the allen head and tighten it up, sorry I can't remember the size. With the allen head is hard to get enough torque on it. My buddy's 08 fell right off and we got it back on to get him home and then replaced with a regular bolt and no more problems. I've replaced my other buddy's 98 5 speed that we thought was stripped with just a bolt and no more problem saving him
$$. Also it's a good idea to replace the shaft ends with Heim joints as they are proned to fail. You can find them on e-bay.

If the splines on that shaft are stripped,a new bolt is just a band-aid fix IMO.
According to my indy HD trained Mech. very few can't be fixed using a new bolt. He's worked for HD and self for more than 20 years but I'm sure if you take it to a Harley shop they will pull the primary.
