I am wondering how many of you that have apes on your RoadKings are rolling with a windshield on? I just picked up my RK that and after installing 16" apes I'm not sure if I really like the look of it with the windshield on. Sure the joy is the King's windshield is on and off SUPER quick but I usually just left it on because how effective the windshield is. Guess I am wondering if most of you go without the windshield most of the time if not all?
Oh, by the way, @ 5'9" with 16" apes it's made my King SOOO much more comfortable than the stock bars.
I trimmed about 6" off my stock windshield. Looks pretty good even with the bars but my maiden voyage with the new w/s was a 1000 mile weekend. Wind buffeting was so bad I almost threw it in the ditch. Haven't had it back on since. Sorry no pics. Something I did notice on that trip though was my fatigue was minimal. Just keeping that wind off your body and chest makes a huge difference when you're really logging the miles.
Kinda interested in this thread. I'd love to swap for apes on my King, but the windshield wont allow me to push the bars as far forward as I like to go. I have long arms and like the bars vertical.

I only have 14" apes but I just roll them forward until they almost touch the windshield. I would like the bars farther forward but I like my windshield. I also like to roll without the shield on short trips. I have the fork mounted wind deflectors which really does help the buffeting. I put them on and take them off all the time. Agreed, it does look 10x better without the shield but it can be nice to have on at times.
I have 14" Chubby Ones on my 2007 FLHRS with a 12 Memphis Shades black gradient windshield mounted on OEM windshield frame. I like my apes and with the windshields low height I think my bike still looks good and is more comfortable to ride. The low shield height allows a fair amount of in your face wind but blocks the wind on my chest. This equates to being able to ride for hours at highway speeds without feeling like I have taken a beating! I hope this helps in your decision.
