Default Apes and Windshields

As I put in some earlier posts, I am about to put 16 inch apes on my 97 FLHR and I am doing some research beforehand. I was wondering if any of you that have experience with this set-up had to do to your windshield to run the apes. I like the look of the bars tipped slightly forward, but I have read where you might have to modify the windshield in order to do this. Like many of you, I really don't want to do without my windshield, unless I am puttin' around town, or bar hoppin'. If anyone has any ideas, adviceor thoughts on the matter I would really appreciate the help.

I have 12 1/2" Apes and I don't have any issues using my windshield. I would be ok with 16" also, but I don't have mine pushed to far forward either.
I would go with 16" if I was to do it again. Good luck.......

No doubt I am going with 16's...I may even go with 18's. I am 6'2" with a 37inch sleve length. Maybe I could get a little forward tilt without modifying my windshield.

If you want them tilted forward, I don't think it will work. I have 16"'s and have never used my windshield because I would have to pull my bars back a bit. Not worth the trade off to me...But it can be done...

A search in these forums willsay that 18s will fit but leave your grips back at your elbows, 16s (like mine) can beslightly forward but with grips at a good spot. of course, anything set up like the above photo means mods to your windshield.

Bandit at bikernet.com did a series of articles modifying a 2003 King. One of the chapters involved installing 18" apes with internal wiring, and another modifying a windshield to work with the apes. It's all in his King Report.

BTW, I think apes on a king look sweet. Post some pics when you're done.

Just one knuckleheads' preference: Apes and windshields just don't mix. Kind of counter-culture to each other.

Your bike and your likes though.
