Question Custom Map vs Power Commander

I ride a 08 Ultra 103 CI 255 SE cams. The custom map makes the bike run very nice with crisp throttle response but I only get 38 MPG. With the custom map the bike runs a bit cooler but with a lot decel popping. The custom map allows me to get a couple more horses and a couple more pounds of tourque.
Today I put the Power Commander map on the bike and I got 48 MPG which is excellent. It looks like I lost a bit of power and throttle response and the bike is running a little bit hotter. It seems to me that the bike is now running like it was meant to run. No decel pop and a bit warmer. A little leaner and great mileage.
Is it worth it to keep the bike running cooler with a custom map, 38 MPG and lots decel popping or stay with Power Commander map with no decel popping, warmer bike and 48 MPG?

I'm confused. What are you using for a tuner with the custom map? Is it one of the SE tuners? OR are you saying you have a Power Commander and had the bike dyno'd and it gets 38mpg, then switched to a map from Dynojet or somewhere for the same PC and your setup, and hence the difference? Also, I have never seen 48mpg any any big twin I have ridden.

I'm also a little confused but thinking that you want to be somwhere in between, running a cooler bike and getting about 40 to 42 mpg.

The decel popping issue is totally simple to fix with the PCV.

Watch your wallet getting into the exhaust popping solutions game. Everybody's got the "fix"...

I tweeked the **** out of my maps at least a dozen times.
Replaced the beat baffle matting and I am golden

Default Decal 'popping' is one of the easiest problems to solve

I went into the map and just added fuel to the 0% throttle position from about 3500 rpm's down to 1000. The reason popping occurs is due to the extreme lean settings at 0% throttle. If your fuel settings are all 0 at 0% throttle then just put in 7 or 8 as a value and save. If there is still a little popping then set the value to 10 and save. The idea is to throw a little fuel to the mix and the popping stops (as long as you have no exhaust leaks somewhere in the system). You have to make sure the bike is warmed up before you make any adjustments. The PCV software will show you when the throttle is at 0 after it warms up in idle.

You are right, that was confusing. I have a PC with a custom dynojet map. I thought 38 MPG was OK, not great but good enough. I have been using this map for the last 15 000 trouble free miles. It surprised the hell out of me to get 48 MPG. This had never happened to me before. I went 125 miles on 2.6 gallons. I called a few friends and I told them and they couldn't believe it either.
I think you are right, I would be happier with a cooler running bike and getting 42 MPG.
I have made a few changes to the custom map but I am afraid to mess it all up.
The decel poppoing worries me a little bit so I just pull the clutch in order to avoid it. Yesterday it felt good not having to do anything to avoid the decel popping unfortunately it felt I was riding a stock bike again. Thank you for the pointers.

Why don't you just put in a switch & use one map for performance and the other for fuel mileage? That's the great thing about a PCV.

This is a great idea. I didn't know this was possible.
