The MoCo
It's THAT you ride. All of the motorcycle dealers are in it ONLY for the money. Expecting HD do be doing anything for you as a group of riders because you support HOG is really silly.
Make your group completely independent of the MOCO and support yourselves.
I never was interested in HOG and if my local dealer closed, I wouldnt even know it unless I read it in the paper.
I buy my parts online and what I cant do, I use a local Indy. I know that doesnt address warranty issues. That may be tough to deal with for some members.
If I had 175 fellow Harley riders without a club, and really wanted to be in one, I'd start my own club.
BTW, sounds like a shitty way they handled that rally.
Why did Honda close the Marysville plant?
Because it made good business sence.
Honda is the worlds largest MC manufacturer. The U.S. is not where they make the most money, its Asia. Its seems as if Honda is downsizing the U.S. market in heavyweight bikes because they arent selling well.
Crap, I bought a new 05 1800VTX in 07 for 8K, thats 6k off list, an 04 Rune in 08 for 17k, thats 10k off list, a new 06 1800VTX in 09 for 9k, thats 7k off list.
When has anyone EVER walked into a HD dealership and bought a new bike for 10k off list?
I can answer that question. NEVER.
As long as the Marysville plant overproduced every year I could afford to keep buying new Hondas every year.
Other than the GW, the largest bike Honda offers in the U.S. this year is a 1300. Honda says they have enough 2010 GW inventory to carry them through the 2011 model year and a new built in Japan GW will be offered in 2012. Honda has said nothing about the rest of the street lineup. Up until a couple months ago there were still new 07 GWs sitting at dealerships. The GW is Hondas U.S. flagship and there are still 3 year old new bikes. Sunrise Honda in Searcy AR has a new 05 1800 VTX sitting on the floor.
Anyone walk into a HD dealership lately and see a new 07 Road King on the showroom floor?
One of my hobbies is economics. I study the economy, I listen to what Americas sucessful businessmen have to say. I study the past.
I have no blind loyalty to any particular brand for anything. When I make a purchase I think it through, weigh the pros and cons, and make a decision.
In a market economy the consumer is King.
Its good to be the King.

The middle class and the middle class demand is what drove prices up. Stocks, homes, motorcycles, everything.
I do not believe that the middle class will ever again have the buying power of the past 2 decades.
Harley and everyone else is trimming the fat to consolidate their resources in an effort to be more profitable.

Whether that boom comes from (legal) immigration, naturalized population or some combination is anyone's guess but it tends to run cyclical just over a much longer span then any one persons lifetime. So I doubt I will see it or maybe I will catch a glimpse of the beginning.
So my
The Best of Harley-Davidson for Lifelong Riders
People were making 20%+ in MM accounts.
Home Depot stock rose so fast that they now have millionairs working for them. 1 share of HD stock purchased in 1980 for $20 is now (dividend reinvestment/stock splits) 257 shares at $32. That is $8224...off a $20 investment. If you put $1000 in that first year you now have over $400,000 in HD stock.
I agree that the middle class will recover, but not to the extent that we saw in the 80s-90s.
We still are in an expanding global economy. It is unknown what the long term effect that the new players (Asia) will have on the U.S. economy.
