Im just curious about this now, I ride an 05 R.K. and been thinking about trading it in on an 07 S.G. but not after what I heard today. I was driving down the road with the family (in my cage), and we came up on a guy riding an 07 Ultra. It was a multi-lane highway so we got along side of him and I could hear a very loud whining noise. We were doing about 60 m.p.h and we had the windows down in the car and that bike sounded like a car with a trubo whistling on it, is this trans noise everyone is talking about really THIS loud? or was I hearing something else? Also at 60 m.p.h. Im not sure if the guy would be in 5th or 6th gear, I know people are saying that 5th gear is the noisy gear. Is it really posible I heard the noisy trans from MY car at 60 m.p.h.? If it was the trans, all I can say is Holy $hit!!!
He was in 5th. It will quiet with BelRay Hypoid in the tranny......but the stock bike is SO quiet, the 5th gear noise really presents itself. My '06 Dyna Anniversary does NOT have the whine. I rode an '07 Ultra last Saturday.....test ride....and yes, it is evident. Not too surprised one can hear it from a car in close proximity.
I have a 07 Road Glide and No that wasn't it, it's not that bad. I have been trying to isolate the noise for a month now, the noise is only evident when the bike is being lugged any other time it's normal plus the exhaust is so quite you can hear everything around you.
I was going to sell my 05' RoadKing Custom and get an 07' also. However, with all the problems I've been reading about both here and elsewhere I will hold off for the 08's. All the bugs I figure should be worked out by then.
IF YOU HAD YOUR ATEREO ON IN THE CAR YOU COULD ALSO HAVE BEEN PICKING UP AUDIO INTERFERENCE. HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN IN 5TH OR HE WAS LUGGING THE ENGING BAD IF IN 6TH AT THAT SPEED.
I had the same clatter in 5th at 2200 rpm during the first 1000 miles... after I serviced it and went to synthetic the sound really has dropped off..Hey its a HARLEY... If I wanted a quiet "performance machine" Id have bought a BMW. This week I added a set of V&H slahcuts the efis1 breather and a tuner....wicked awesome exhaust sound....screw the improved stock exhaust sound
okay here's the deal IMHO on my 2007 flhr. 5th gear sounds very noisey if you shift before 60 to 65 mph under acceleration. if you wait untill 65 or 70 the tranny sounds great. this bike hauls a**. she likes being rode hard and is very happy at 55 in 4th gear and if your in a hurry try shifting to 5th when you get to 75 . when just cruising 5th gear at 55 is fine but if you accelerate to hard she does'nt like it so i down shift to 4th first or add throttle smoothly. i am very happy the bike and what a sweet ride. Oh, the other day after a 100 mile ride she leaked a drop of oil out ot the primary case, when she cooled down dry as a bone. i felt proud as a father should. what a girl.
If I find time, I'm bringing my video camera on the bike and hopefully will catch the 5th gear noise. If you are in a car nearby with the windows down, yeah you can hear it for sure. I'd best explain it as a whirrrrr.
Suprised no one else has captured audio on this. It's NOT a lugging issue.
You guys are all wrong. Harley put an internal turbo on the 07's and just have not told us yet. [sm=exactly.gif]
I know mine is NOT that loud. Tranny really doesn't bother me much and I have to admit since I have put B&E muffers on I don't hear is so much. One thing I still notice is the loud shifting "clunk" noise when I am up shifting from gear to gear but that's normal from past years. Right? My 05 Deuce doesn't do it but I understand touring bikes do.....
