117" in a FLHX...
Curious if there are anyone else out there who is a long trip rider as well. I am looking to see if this is an overkill motor, getting too hot, and burning too much fuel.
We were talking 10.5:1 compression, but i don't want to rely on Octane booster all the time.
I used to think SE was the way to go, but with my current build [sig] I surpassed the HD numbers for the 103 ST 2.
So I chose to look into aftermarket.
I was set on 107, but if I do the bottom end, it should be closer to bulletproof.
Too Hot?
To much fuel?
PIA?
Oil consumption?
I'm asking as I am toying with either riding across Canada Next year, Vancouver to Halifax, then back as fast as possible [I-90?] until Sturgis / Yellowstone. OR the Hoka Hey Challenge. The latter sounds really extreme. Search goog le you'll see it.
Its a big long winded Thread, but everything about going big inch is welcome info.
Cost, problems, numbers, fuel consumption, wheelies, transmission failure, burnouts - Whatever-
I don't want to wheelie...
... but cool to know I can...
117" was chosen as they supposedly make the best cylinders. they can provide the pistons, and match 'em.
I'm a sick sick man... [big smile]
I was just talking to Steve (I think) at Fullsac the other day. I said 103" and he said, "Why not 107"? It just the same price..."
I myself would rather a 107" blueprinted and built from the ground up (that would suffice for me) though I did notice Paul Sr's bagger in (was it the previous issue?) of Bagger and it's a 117". I wonder if there's a "default" motor for which they have an affinity there, like a 117"?

Also, you don't mention if the crank will be plugged/welded; typically they are for builds over 107.
As for heat, mpg, oil, etc., well-matched components, assembled right, with a good tune will give you a bike that performs better than stock bike.
Good luck with your build.
