Default 117" in a FLHX...

I'm getting a quote [and probably pulling the trigger] on an Axtell117 build with a dynamic balanced crank, timken, and Baisley Heads, Wood Cams.

Curious if there are anyone else out there who is a long trip rider as well. I am looking to see if this is an overkill motor, getting too hot, and burning too much fuel.

We were talking 10.5:1 compression, but i don't want to rely on Octane booster all the time.

I used to think SE was the way to go, but with my current build [sig] I surpassed the HD numbers for the 103 ST 2.

So I chose to look into aftermarket.

I was set on 107, but if I do the bottom end, it should be closer to bulletproof.

Too Hot?
To much fuel?
PIA?
Oil consumption?

I'm asking as I am toying with either riding across Canada Next year, Vancouver to Halifax, then back as fast as possible [I-90?] until Sturgis / Yellowstone. OR the Hoka Hey Challenge. The latter sounds really extreme. Search goog le you'll see it.

Its a big long winded Thread, but everything about going big inch is welcome info.

Cost, problems, numbers, fuel consumption, wheelies, transmission failure, burnouts - Whatever-

I don't want to wheelie...

... but cool to know I can...

117" was chosen as they supposedly make the best cylinders. they can provide the pistons, and match 'em.

I'm a sick sick man... [big smile]

Sounds like lotsa fun! I've been reading real good things on the tman builds! Ya might consider those as well!

I am just assembling some similar parts to do a 117. Going to run a little higher compression (11.3:1) but don't expect it to be a problem. A good combination of parts and a good tune it should be a blast.

What's with you B.C. guys and your 117s?

I hear it's going to be a La Nińa year. Maybe I should start thinking about winter projects, too......

Default I was just talking to a Harley tech today...

...I said 107" and he said, "What about 113"? Bore out stock cases,etc...."

I was just talking to Steve (I think) at Fullsac the other day. I said 103" and he said, "Why not 107"? It just the same price..."

I myself would rather a 107" blueprinted and built from the ground up (that would suffice for me) though I did notice Paul Sr's bagger in (was it the previous issue?) of Bagger and it's a 117". I wonder if there's a "default" motor for which they have an affinity there, like a 117"?

You don't give much detail about the build regarding the heads and cams. The difference between 103/107 and 113 (using HD 4.060 cylinders) or 117 (using Axtell cylinders) is in the cylinder diameters. Probably adds about $400 or so to the cost instead of doing the 103/107.

Also, you don't mention if the crank will be plugged/welded; typically they are for builds over 107.

As for heat, mpg, oil, etc., well-matched components, assembled right, with a good tune will give you a bike that performs better than stock bike.

Good luck with your build.

I'm guessing Superstock from Baisley, and darkworks crank. Dynamically ballanced. Supertrapp 2-1, SE Heavy Breather. Probably somethong done to the clutch too.

I'm running a 117" in mine and only have about 2k miles on it so far. I am running 2 jagg oil coolers and TTS mastertune. I am only running a base map but I am averaging around 38 mpg on it as long as I don't twist the wrist too much. I am going to put another 1500 miles on it then have it tuned. Mine has S & S crank, woods 408 gear drive cams, harley mva heads, axtell cylinder/pistons, barnett scorpion clutch. Overall I'm happy with the bike but it does produce more heat than my 103 build. I also had to modify my hard lowers to clear the oil coolers but I wanted to run the lowers in fall/winter/spring. I was able to ride it some when it was really hot here a few weeks ago ~100* and the oil temp never got over 230*.

Nice parts but why wait to have it tuned? There will not be a base map that is even close to what you need. Braking them in on the dyno IMHO is where you can watch afr's and temps. I wouldn't be using vtune to tune this combo with.

Default 117 Axtell

My 117 axtell motor built by Hillside is the coolest running bike I own. Well matched components, and a great tune is the key.

My 2010 96" bakes my rear end, and my wifes legs. The 117 runs LOTS cooler.
