Hello all, I know this may sound crazy but I would like to know what to look for when I start looking for a used touring bike Harley of course. I've owned a few Jap models but am wanting to move up to maybe a 2002-2005 Ultra Glide. I know folks who have them but I would like some outside answers! One thing I did hear is Harley's need serviced around every 30.000 miles I can't remember if it was valves or not but I am seeing allot of used bikes for sale around those marks 30.000, 60.000 miles? Anyway any info at all would be great about what to look for.
The main thing for those model years would be to inspect the cam chain tensioners.20000-30000 miles is when they should be looked at.
Lots of info here in regards to this subject if you use the search feature.

Before you buy do a compression test, & check the voltage at the battery while the bike is running. If the seller can't show you verifiable proof of cam tensioner & shoe replacement plan on that expense. Also look for a stabilizer on those year frames. After you buy any used bike change *all* the fluids. It's good for the machine & will familiarize you with your new ride.
For the money and the way the market is right now for used bike for a couple thousand more you could be sitting on something a little newer. A lot of 07's and 08's out there that are fresh trades from guys that wanted the newer frame. All up to you in the end though.
The 09 will be less of a project and will hold its value better based on the new design. If possible, finance an 09. Talk to your local dealer, I'm sure one of them is sick of looking at an 09 and needs more room for the new stuff. They can ship from other stores.
Good luck and don't forget to search this forum to find out how cool the Road Glide is.
02 is one of the better years new swing arm(stronger) first year of delphi injection, and last year of forged crankshaft.02-05 all have cam chian tensioner issuies.0?-05 have some valve seal issues.
