Hey guys, wife and I are thinking about getting a bigger bike and I really like the RG Ultra. We've been kicking around on our Dyna Lowrider for quite awhile and that sucker gets cramped on cross country rides.
So I'm wondering how comfortable the stock seat is, if there is any buffeting from the stock windshield, are the trunk and side cases simple to operate, can you hear the stereo at speed? How is the handling? I guess I'm just looking for someone that has really put their RG through the wringer. I'm 6'1" and my wife is a foot shorter, I suppose we should just go ride one but I don't know anyone here who has one....yet. Don't think my local dealer has a demo model either.
The stock seat may work for you - it is by far better than previous years. If you are 280 lbs like me, it's only good for a couple hours. I can ride all day on my Corbin.
The $30 snap-on FLTR wind deflectors work great for me. Make sure the demo bike has them.
Luggage works great. I added the retractable trunk tether and the nice looking hinges - personal preference.
Stereo is fine, even with a V&H Pro Pipe.
Handling is superb!
I've owned a '04 Wide Glide, '06 Road King, '07 Road Glide, and now the '11 RGU. I've got nearly 5k miles on the RGU, and like it more every time I ride it.
Picked mine up about the 1st of August. It handles much nicer than the 05 Road KIng Classic I had (55,000 miles). Stock seat is good, much better than the stock seat that was on my FLHRCI, no need for a different seat. With the stock exhaust no problem listening to the tunes. Bag's and tour pack easy to use & secure gear in. Being that I am 6'4" I get a little bit of buffeting from the wind, but not to bad, I may look into a different windsheild next spring. Overall am very happy with the "Fugly" bike!!!! Just about 5000 miles so far.
I've got about 5,500 miles on my RG Ultra so far and done some all day rides several times. I think the seat is much better than the previous one I had on my 2006 EG Ultra. The seat is comfortable enough for me that I don't plan to change it or modify it. The windshield works well and I added the $30 part that helps decrease buffeting. The tour pak and saddlebags are simple to open/close. I hear the stereo fine except when wearing a full helmet (but that's not the stereo's fault). If you wear a full helmet, you can listen through the headphones and it will be much more clear. The newer touring frame that was first used on the 2009s, handles very good. Over all I am very happy with it and think it rides much better than my previous 2006 EG Ultra. Other things you will like are the ABS brakes, security, and the 103 engine that come standard on the RG Ultra.
Thanks for the responses guys, I do appreciate it. I'm Lubbock TX and should update my profile to show that. I've always like the RG's and this Ultra is awesome, I'm glad Harley put this out, it's a winner for me. I've never ridden a bike this big, not by a long shot, but I used to think my Dyna was "big". I guess the closest I've come is a BMW R1100RT--those really are big.
Oh just a side note; here in Lubbock we've had 4 motorcycle deaths in the past week, some the riders fault, some not. It's really sad to see that--so be careful out there!
I don't have the "official" ultra version, but added the TourPak to mine with the quick detachable bracket - comes off in <5 minutes for the sportier feel and look. The RG handles very well and I think you'll be plesently surprised.
FYI - The $30 part people are talking about is a pair of wind deflectors that mounts to the top of the crash bars and come up between then fairing and the tank.
Dito on all the points from Teachu2, with two additions. I'm also 6' 1", wife shorter than me. With the stock shield, the wind hits my helmet about 2-3" from the top. Am ordering a slightly taller shield with recurve to limit the noise from the wind. Lastly, my wife was a bit cramped sitting behind me, especially since I had a backrest installed. I installed a tour pak extension from George Anderson, very easy to install and made a big difference. My wife loves it.
Congrats on the new RG, ride safe!
