My new RK is at 964 miles and I am debating to schedule it for the 1000 mile service... but I would rather do it myself. Thing is I was wanting to switch to amsoil in the engine and tranny and put the HD tranny+ in the primary. I looked at the owners manual (the service manual is not yet avail) and really there is nothing at 1000 a shade tree guy couldn't do, unless I am missing something. Change the fluids, grease the fork bearings, check some torques (which I need the specs on), verify the belt tension (mine, I think needs adjusting and I am not sure how to do it on a touring bike yet, my dnya was easy, but different the the RK and I have the tension measuring tool thingy), inspect the break fluid and lines, no fuel or oil leaks, hell if the electric stuff didn't work I would know, I inspect tires and pressure regular, and I was gonna get a spoke torque wrench... and the dealer gets like 300 bucks for this??? Whiskey Tango Foxtrot...over!
My thing is the warranty... I did the 1000 on my dyan no prob... the king is really do diff except the drive belt... I hear so much crap about dealer not honoring warranty because they didn't do the service or some other reason. I have not yet needed warranty work on any of my bikes, but the 07 has me a little concerned. what to do... [>:]
Of course, the service writer was incorrect - I along with the techs at our dealership recommend heavier tranny oil than 20W-50. Personally, I like Red Line Heavy Duty Shockproof oil. The tranny shifts like butter. As for being initially charged for the Syn 3, that is one of the choices in the menu the S.W. uses when he makes up the work order. That's why it's supposed to be explained when you get ready to pay. Most errors will be caught before it's rung up as a sale. Don't be too rough on the writer, he may be a noob (like me) - there's a lot to learn.
Also dont fault the MOCO. Understand that the dealers are independent buisness people and cannot be dictated to by HD. There is a buisness relationship with the MOCO but there is no supervision by the motor co and there cannot be. Dealers are not franchises like a lot of people thinkAs long as you keep records you can do your own maintenance. Use any good oil of your own choosing.I use AMSOIL and nothing else. I cannot tell you what an inferior overpriced oil that syn3 is .I wouldnt use it in a 50cc honda.
