I,m a little over 800 miles now , So I ,m planing on getting a appointment with the local Harley shop for the Glorified oil change .
I figure it worth the money to have it documented .
Whats the going rate for the 1000 mile check up on my 2007 Low Rider ?
And question for who has been there and done that ?
What is the best oils and lubes in your opinion ?
Also if I dont have them use Harley brands can it mess up my waranty ?
One last thing . Do they change all fluids at 1000 miles or just the motor oil ?
Thanks...
I use Mobil 1 20-50 V-Twin in the crankcase, Formula+ in the primary, and Redline Shockproof in the tranny.
Costs for the service vary depending on the dealer / labor rate.
We have five dealers in the area, and only one of them will use anything other than HD oils - that's the one I go to. I bring the oil with me for appointments. After my service contract runs out, I will do it all myself
Using oils other than HD should not void the warranty, but the dealer may try to give you grief.
I must have a good dealer because they asked me what I wanted in it.I chose syn 3 in the engine and primary, spectro syn in the tranny. My reasoning on the syn 3 being since h-d offers 7 year extended warranties would they really want problems arising from the use of bad oil? After the 1000 mi.service I started doing it myself anyway and decided to stay with the same oils.Side notene of the reasons I use gear oil in the tranny is because it is a different color(red) than the engine oil so if I get a leak I will be able to find the leak.

RE: 1000 miles around the corner
I had my 1K done at the dealer for the same reason as you mention. I opted for the Syn3 and chrome filter...nothing else added/done. I got skinned for $401; spendy oil change and wash job. Oh well, what price peace of mind? I'll be doing my own service from here on out. Short of that, I'll find an independent who's semi-retired and knows his Harleys.
I dunno if I'm just lucky but thestandard of service and attention to detail at my local dealer is outstanding. I've always done my own oil changes but I've had a couple of book services ( 5000 and 20 000 miles) done by the dealer and its pretty easy to tell if it's been done properly or not. Ifit's been done right you will know by the time you get tothird gear because it will feel heaps better to ride. Anytime I've ever had a problem with it, it'sbeen fixed on the spot although I usually give them a call to let them know I'm coming.Maybe I 'm just lucky but I really cant speak highly enough of my local dealer.
I feel the same way about the dealer where I bought my bike also if performed properly the 1000 mi. service is more than just a fluid change as it gives the dealer a chance to make any needed adjustments and now would be the time to voice any complaints/concerns that you may have.I think you have to have a dealership where the people there are riders and enthusiasts like yourself.
I just had mine done, shop rate here is 75. we had a new dealership open 3 weeks ago, closer to my house, so I called both. Dealer 1 where I bought my bike quoted 245. with syn, dealer 2 quoted 275 with syn. I gave them the option of meeting the lower price, which they did. made it through the detail boy and was ready for me to take,,, and it was dripping oil. the wrench did not use the shield on the filter removal, and let oil spill on the motor mount both the wrench and thee towel boy got a reeming...
Thanks guys ,
I just called yesterday to makw an appointment .
Dealer serviceman said around $200.00 for the standard Harley oil or $225.00 with the synthetic oils .
