I can see both sides........even though I don't agree with some of it I can understand why.

I've never dealt with an Indy shop but do they run the same way a dealer would? I mean if I bought Dresser Duals, Monster Ovals and a Fuel Pak on the internet and brought them to an Indy to install would he say the same thing as a dealer? In other words he could order those parts as well for a markup

My point is "customer service" I shouldn't have to drive 25 mins up the road to another dealer. It's not about saving money, It's about taking care of the people who spent $22k at your dealership. I'm not lecturing anyone, I'm simply stating the truth. I'm sure there are many other reasons dealers are closing besides the obvious facts you pointed out. Bottom line is OC HD can make whatever decisions they please, my business will go to elsewhere.

I'd be willing to bet a very large % of Harley dealers won't install parts that aren't purchased from them.

Before anyone gets too carried away lecturing on why so many Harley dealers are closing here's the facts:

a. there were too many to begin with even at 2000 demand levels.
b. Harley and their dealer network better adjust their business model to 2010 levels or below. The glory days of the late 90's aren't coming back anytime soon.... if ever.

Find a indy near to you, they tend to charge more for your parts installed but most won't turn down work. Friends of mine use Brick City Customs from time to time on the work they cannot do on their own, they add 10% to the tab if parts are furnished by customer and there is NO warranty except for their quality of work.

Damn, I miss out on everything...

I don't have a dealer, I have to go to some one else's dealer. (Not really, I've worked as a mechanic for most of my years, and I have learned there is a valid reason to do my own work... )

I agree with you being disapointed, you bought the bike there and you tried to buy the part there.

But not the part where you have to drive 25 minutes to the next HD dealer.
If I skip out on my local dealer it's 1 1/2 hours to the next two closest dealers and 2 hours to the 3rd closest.

Having done this particular job I'm surprised they'd dop it for just $130. Wonder what the going rate has been at dealerships and whether they're pulling the inner primary or not. The cost of a new gasket for the primary cover is $36. The derby cover gasket service kit is about $6. Pull the inner and you're in for a further $25 in gaskets and seals. That means they're charging you at going rates about 1 hr labor. That's pretty quick work even if it is a straight forward job.

damn 25 minutes up the road, that is insane you have two shops that close together lol. In my neck of the woods at least 120 miles between dealers.

For me, Westminster HD is only a little farther away than OC HD. Would you recommend Westminster HD. Also, have you tried and independant dealers in the area?

I say adding to the labor price if you bring your own parts is fair. They should have that posted. Here in Germany the labor rate is 75 Euro an hour ($105.00). I would gladly pay an additional 10% in labor charges because I supply my own parts. I can order a $200 genuine H-D part from Zanotti's that will cost on average double here, but double in Euro. That means a $200 part ends up costing roughly $500 plus installation. This is the reason I will gladly pay an extra 10% for labor. The local H-D shop (Rhein Necker) I use recently told me that I was going to be the last customer they let bring in parts for installation. I think I will offer them an additional 10% and see if we can keep our arrangement.
