Posted this in the General Chat as well. Thought maybe the touring guys can answer.

Ok so I went to the local HD dealer(Harley-Haven in Irmo) just to look around and wife do some x-mas shopping.

Walked up on a 1998 EG with 42k miles for $8500. I always loved baggers when done right and this may be my chance without spending $20k. Its black with silver flames on the front fairing, tank and hard bags, had exhaust, crash bars, highway pegs, etc. Looked like it had different than stock grips, some sort of black leathery animal skin feel/look.

It did need some TLC. Paint job would be on the list. Just old maybe, wasnt peeling etc.. Front fender needed some work, had some damage on the front of it. The dash had some fading which could be removed and painted the guy said. Engine could use some chrome refurbishing or maybe tape everything and have it painted black. Also the inside of the hard bags had nothing in them. I could install some interior of some sort. Suede, or just really any type of fabric.

The sales manager said it was a techs bike. That whatever bike comes in is looked over heavily and engine is great but would need some love on body etc.

So anything to worry about a 1998 other than its a 1998! I mean my nightster has 5k miles for an 07( only 1k are me) and it has a good amount of parts on it. I havent dumped any money into it so Im not throwing money away If I get rid of it.

Love my nightster but with my Dad in Tennessee and step dad and mom in FL that far of a ride on a nightster is painful. I rode to Rockingham a couple weeks ago and back and was sore after. A bagger will be much better on my body.

So 42k miles a lot? Am I getting into a money pit on a bike that old? I do love the potential of a bagger though.

Im sure I can get it for less than $8500. Like I said its the techs bike and most likely no lien on it and he probably just wants to get rid of it and use money for next/other project maybe.

This style flames

Really nice looking bike, last year of the evo. Looks like a lot has gone into it. $8500 some would say is high, but no surprise because it is at a dealer. If it was me I would say do it, more comfort than the nightster, and the wifey will love it too.
Start at $7500 if your keeping the nightster, or if they giving you a trade in value for the nightster you might have to pay the full $8500? Good luck a great motor and a great bike.

Also post this on the evo section.

The picture is just the style of flames it has, thats not the bike. I wish I would have got it today!

Going to have to trade Nightster. Maybe someday I can have 2 bikes, just not now. I got my nightster for pretty cheap I think. Well at least a good deal. Paid $7900 and has a good amount of money into it and low miles.

What about it being a 1998 and 42k miles? If taken care of and went through HD inspection before hitting floor I shouldnt be worried? Its just going from a low mile 2007 to a 42k mile 12 y/o bike.

It being winter season would give me time to clean up the bike, do some minor work to get it nice. Guy said the motor is fine and runs great. So would just need to get the bike itself cleaned up.

I might have too go back by with my bike and see what they can do for my trade in, and look over the bike more and see what Ill need to do. Like I said its a workers bike so he may go lower on price.

You should spend some time taking all the upgrade parts off your Nightster. You should have the take-off parts, right?

I did that when I traded my 07 and made a couple grand off the parts. Turned around and put that money back into my new bike. I found out that HD parts sell fast on Ebay!!!

I bought the nightster with the forward controls, apes, white walls, exhaust etc so I dont have all the stock parts.

All I have are some 16'' ape bars that I bought.

I could clean up the EG pretty good for a decent amount of money. It wont be show quality etc but wouldnt be bad.

Most of it I can do myself.

I have a 1995 Electraglide Classic, 78000 miles ( mostly highway of course). It's awesome- the evo motor and 5 speed are about bullet proof. Carb, anyone can understand how to tune or fix it. Air suspension front and rear. Single piston brakes do a fine job of stopping ( how much power do you need beyond "locked up")
Great weather protection from the fairing , mine also has lowers.
Radio is a big plus.
Big cushy seat 500-600 mile days, day after day and you are not beat up.

----I bet the bike you are looking at has alot of those positives.----

But DOES the dealer really go through the used bikes ( and if so will they warranty anything?)

BTW mines for sale at $7000, but you'd have to come to PHX for it--nice time of year for riding here!

I was asking questions about 42k miles, the whole 12 y/o bike worries. Not sure who he was ( assuming was sales/floor manager) said " we inspect every bike over throughly and if anything needs to be changed it is." Not sure how much of that is true, but Im sure they check it pretty good. They dont want their name getting out there for selling trashed bikes.

So $8,500, Its a techs bike so Im sure I could take a little more off bike. Like I said he probably has no lean and just wants out of it for next project/bills etc.

Motor should be alright. 42k miles seems high but for a 98' it doesnt sound like a lot if you think about it.

I would have too
-Paint(thinking a red with black flames) along with black crash bars
-Paint motor, replace any rusted out bolts, etc. Nice looking/clean motor look
-Install fabric inside bags
-Paint dash
-Tint small windshield above fairing
-Replace handle bars with black apes
-new grips
-Have wheels re chromed/PC black
-Polish forks etc.

Seems like a lot but most of this I can do. Not sure how hard it is to remove the dash on an EG.

Start spending big money when I get to the apes, cables, grips, wheels etc. But thats parts not stuff to clean the bike up. So not too much money i dont think.

Really wanting a bagger. But not sure If I should get this one

Thoughts?

Worth it for that price and mileage?

Has front fender damage. And the list of things to do as far as paint, engine cleaning/painting, dash painting, etc. These are things it NEEDS not things I will do eventually. I would say from 1-10 scale, 10 being best, its a 5-6.

I would say fair condition. I would probably just buy a new front fender actually.

It has decent miles for 12 years old but wasnt taken care that well.

Maybe $6.5k. Can argue the fender, paint, scratches on rear of left side bag, etc.

And its winter so I can bring home and start to paint, renew dash, etc.

you know how I feel about it (from your post in general chat). I'd love to have a sporty like yours to go with my EG. Maybe one day.
