To the op. I do think the Ultras come with heat shields. If it doesn't, you should give Captain Itch's Crotch Coolers a try, they really work. If you're still hungup on having the HD Heat Shields, I have a pair of like new ones I'll sell you for 25.00 shipped. How's that?

They all are hot.I don't care what year you buy. They are air cooled. When it's sitting still its hot.If your getting a good deal, buy it.The only difference with the newer ones 09-10,would be frame & bigger back tire. You can always fix the heat problem.I fixed it with my 2010.It's called a D&D Boarzilla & a TTS Mastertune!!!Lol!!!

Slash how many miles u got on your 08? Glad to here of no major problems and for the price and
miles, I may just pull the trigger!
Just hit 22,000 on the Ultra (between this and the my '08 RoadGlide before it- ridden 34,000 total miles on '08 touring bikes.

The '08's (not mine) but the earliest one's produced had a fuel filter shell recall for hairline cracks...
I'm sure they can check that out to be sure you're in the clear.

remember the first few years of the twin cam motor, everyone was complaining that they ran so hot. there is a misconception here in that the twin cam motor is so much more efficient at radiating heat than its predecessor, the evo motor. figure it this way, you're sitting on top of a big air cooled motor, straddling it almost. my 08 seemed to run hot till i got to the magic 4,000 mile mark, then it seemed that the power came up, and it ran cooler. i'm guessing it's because all the internal parts had finally decided to get along with each other, and run smoothly like a machine. i've talked with several other owners and it seems that they break over to smoother, more powerful, and generally better running, cooler etc at the 4k to 5k mile mark. and like trailfndr mentioned, it's only noticeable when riding very slow or stopped, they cool just great going down the road.

No Prob...

Here's the details:

Subject: Safety Recall Campaign 0135

Harley-Davidson Motor Company, Inc. has decided that a defect relating to motor vehicle safety may exist on certain 2008 model year FLHP, FLHPE, FLHR, FLHRC, FLHRSE4, FLHT, FLHTC, FLHTCU, FLHTCUSE3, FLHTP, FLHX, FLTR model motorcycles built May 6, 2007 through December 11, 2007. These 2008 model motorcycles may experience a cracking of the fuel filter shell leading to a loss of fuel pressure. This loss of fuel pressure can cause diminished performance and in some cases may cause an engine stall, or a no-start condition. This condition could lead to a crash which could cause injury or death to the rider.
We have voluntarily declared this a defect related to motor vehicle safety (Campaign 0135) to allow us to formally recall all affected motorcycles. The remedy is to remove the original fuel filter shell P/N 62229-08 and replace it with a new fuel filter shell P/N 62229-08A. A service bulletin outlining the repair and credit procedure will follow within two weeks. Based on the schedule our supplier has provided we expect to begin shipping 10,000 or more repair kits world-wide, in our first wave, on or before the week of August 4, 2008. Please reference the Service Bulletin for a detailed description of the defect.

In the interest of the safety of our mutual customers and as required by law, you may sell but NOT DELIVER any affected motorcycles to your customers until the remedy is completed. Please refer to h-dnet.com on the Service Page/Safety and Product Campaign/Open Safety Campaign Instructions and the Safety Campaign and Open VIN Lists in the Service Toolbox for an updated list of affected VINs for this recall. Select the appropriate campaign number link (0135) to view any outstanding vehicles involved.

In accordance with Federal regulations administered by NHTSA, Harley-Davidson Motor Company, Inc. will provide notice to all owners of record of affected products with direction to bring the vehicle in for the recall service.

Yup, mines
hot
alright-just look at my pic after a short ride!
Actually, the 08 is about as hot as the 01 I had. Like what was said earlier,,any engine that you put your legs around is going to be hot, if it's air cooled or not..
34740 miles, no complaints
R.

08's did not come with factory heat shields at least the Ultras did not. There are many ways to deal with heat. For us the Harley heat shields, true duals, slipons, high performance air filter & a fuel manager made the heat totally tolerable. When stock the passenger right side leg heat was practically unbearable.
