I have an 06 Ultra, I want to get rid of the saddle bag rails to give it a more stream lined look. I talked to the guy at the Harley shop yesterday and he said it can't be done. I think it can! I would just need to use a couple bolts on each side of the rear fender to fill those holes, then get a bar off a E Glide standard or a street glide to support the bags. There has to be a way to do this. Or am I wrong?
I've been thinking about doing the same, I'm sure just a new set of bars without the wrap around bars would do the trick but have not taken the time to look them up in the HD book.
Its so simple and there are two ways to do it, get out your hd catalog, you can remove the gaurds and replace the rear crash bar with the down swept ones, this way if you did drop it your bags would be saved, and they look kool. Option no.2 is as you said get the saddle bag support piece also in the catalog, this will replace the crash bar with just the bottom bag support. as to the rear holes, just put the bolts back in after removing the grab rails, also you can remove the as a whole, take out two front crash bar bolts and two rear bag rail bolts and it comes off in one piece.
Thanks guys, I must have been talking to the parts guy on the phone that was having a lazy moment and decided it was easier to tell me no than to look in his book. Figures.
You can just take the horizontal bars off by unbolting them from the front vertical bar and the fender strut in the rear. The rear holes are just tapped holes and the holes in the front vertical guard you can just put a black or chrome cap in. That way you don't have to buy anything.
That is a good point! I might just do that for now and see if I stay happy with it. I'm sure I will but I think I'll try your idea first. I'll take some pics later. I need new pictures anyway. LOL
The holes and bolts go all the way thru, it looks kinda crappy cause the bolt keepers will have left marks on the bars,If you like the look, then spend the c note and make it nice.
